clarifying my question?
emachine came with 512 ram. Can expand to 2 g's, so installed 1 g in empty slot. Now want to increase to 2 g's, but could only get one stick w/2 g's. Can I remove both old and semi-new sticks and replace with just one 2g's in one slot?

Yes. That is the preferred method. In fact I'm suprised that the 1gb ran with the 512mb. Mixing ram usually causes stability issues.
