What if this is as good as it gets?

What if America's unemployment rate follows the UK and stays in double digits from now forward? What if outsourcing and the total collapse of manufacturing in America leave us so weak that this "stimulus" package the government is driving forward, is in reality attempting to push our economy to a state that used to be normal, but is no longer possible?

It is unlikely because we have what seems like an endless demand for services. We have people who pluck the hair from our eyebrows and cut our nails as well as take care of our children and clean our homes while we "work" performing some service for other people. It has been a long time since manufacturing was a the dominate part the economy, it is now 12% but it was only 20% in 1970 and we still make almost as much stuff because the introduction of computers has made it more efficient.
