Once you quit a job is it legal for the company to say they fired you?
I work as a contractor in Iraq. I recently put in my resignation. The company then turned around and fired me two days later. Is this a legal thing to do?

This is a difficult one. If there are no ongoing disciplinary actions or other factors, normally this couldn't happen. You would have to look at the grounds on which the company fired you after you handed in your resignation - any organisation has to provide valid reasoning to terminate a contract, if they simply did it because they were angry at your resignation you may have grounds for unfair dismissal.
I would advise you consult an employement lawyer.

You work AS a contractor or FOR a contractor? As a contractor, you should have a contract with the terms and what each party has to do if they want to terminate the contract. When I was doing contract work, it said that it could be terminated at any time by either party with 30 days written notice, otherwise the contract is usually payable in full. Still, it depends on your own contractual agreement.
If you are an employee FOR a contractor in Iraq and it's a US company, they go by US rules, which makes employment "at will," in which case they can terminate you at any time for any reason, except those specifically protected by law. Many companies will immediately terminate an employee who gives notice just because they don't want a "lame duck" person around who may have reasons to harm the company in some way. They can say they terminated you, but to another employer you can always say you were terminated upon giving your notice.

Nope Is your resignation in writing? I suggest you contact the human resource dept. of the company who hired you and clear up the mistake. Make sure you have a paper trail to follow, including fax, emails and registered or couriered letters.

It's not nice, but it is legal. Employment is "At will" and can be terminated at any time by either party.

no I don't think it was legal, but you were working in Iraq and you really don't have rights in a warzone.
