How to answer pre employment personality tests? Like K-mart, Petsmart etc.?

I have been taking many many pre employment personality tests that go along with the job application lately. Some of the places have been K-mart, Petsmart, Petco, JcPenney's, and Sears. Does anyone especially those who have taken one and have gotten hired know what answers they are looking for? I have been told you either strongly agree or strongly disagree on all the questions. But I googled it yesterday and some sites said that was true and to make yourself appear to be very social. But I also heard the opposite that they wanted someone more in the middle and that they can tell if your answers seem to "superhuman" so how should I be answering these to get the job? Also what do you put for the one that asks if you enjoy dealing with angry customers all day? In my over thinking mind I assume if you put you do then they might think you MAKE customers angry and if you put you don't they assume you cannot be in customer service. Any help would be great!

I still am looking for a summer job. I always try to answer them honestly. So maybe that's why I can't get one.

Try to give them the answers they want. Look for hidden sub-meanings. Like if it says "I know someone who stole something in their life" (while almost everyone does) answer no because they read the question as "I hang out with theives."

Friend, you're asking the wrong question. There are no "correct" answers in the way that I think you mean. But there is a correct way to approach the test -- be honest. Believe me, these tests have sophisticated ways of knowing if you're trying to make yourself out to be better than you really are. And deception (which they'll likely pick up on anyway) is probably far more damaging to your chances of employment than almost any other finding on such a measure.

the psychologists who make up these tests go to some length to determine from the answers when people are trying to fool the test and pretend to be someone they aren't.

just answer them honestly. if the test suggests your answers are less than honest, you'll not get hired.

Source(s): there's a manual of APA approved tests in the reference section of college libraries [for those colleges that teach psych, of course]. last i looked, it is two LARGE volumes long and contains entries for several thousand tests. it also discusses the validating processes used and that's how i know the better tests have built in checking.
