How to adjust an interior door?

My bathroom door doesn't latch unless I lift up on it. How can I adjust it so the striker meets the opening on the side/frame?

House is 5 yrs. old

Sounds like the door is sagging or the hinges are loose. Try tightening the hinge bolts. If it still doesn't latch try this. On the lower hinge on the door, take the screws out of one side of hinge. Insert a thin piece of cardboard(like the stuff on the back of a notepad) in between the hinge and the wood. Replace the screws and see if the door will latch. If it still won't, you might have to do the same with the middle hinge and/or add more cardboard to the bottom hinge. gl

grab and try to move the door up and down. try the handle and also stick your finger in the latch and see if its loose. Tighten any screws . See where the latch bolt hits the striker plate. Is it a little low? u might be able to adjust the striker or for a final you can remove the screws from the lowest hinge and put a shim behind it then retighten. Try a piece of cardboard.

Check the hinges on the door. It's not likely the problem but it's always good to check. You may be able to slightly move the strike plate by loosening the screws and pressing it down then retightening but if you need to adjust the position you can do it like this.

To adjust the strike plate, put some masking tape on the strike plate and a bit of lipstick on the latch. Push the door into the doorjamb and you will be able to see how much adjustment is necessary with the lipstick on the tape.

Remove the strike plate, adjust the hole with knife or chisel, then replace the strike plate with new screw holes to match the new hole. You should be OK.

    Good luck.

If you can latch the door by lifting it up, you need to first check the hinges for loose screws. A loose or worn upper hinge will let the door sag enough that it won't latch, and the fact that you can lift it up is a pretty good indication of a bad hinge.

Move the striker up slightly, most likely will need to cut out the mortise for strike to get it even with door jamb.

Steve has got it backwards, can try to plumb the door by running a long screw in the bottom hinge or shim the top hinge.

using a drill, remove one of the screws in the top hinge and screw in a three inch screw really tight,if that doesnt do it shim out the bottom hinge

take a look at the hinges they my be loose and need tightening.
