What happened to the other zombies after Jesus was resurrected?

(Mat 27:50 NRSV) Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last.

The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.

(Apparently they just sat there for 3 days until after the resurrection)

After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many

Update:

No way Michael!

Zombies is an AWESOME word to describe them.

Update 2:

Well Michael, although you know much of the bible and are most wise...

Zombie mythology are where Glow shines my friend ;o) I will explain why it is NOT a bad thing at all!

I will start with popular culture.

Firstly, not all zombies are dead to start with. Some are people with viruses which encourage anger (28 days later) some are people cursed and/or under the control of a sorcerer or object (this also includes mummies). Most are reanimated corpses, and are either slow or fast depending on the genre, and will feast on brains or not depending on it too. They are generaly without personality, but can show some such as in Night of the Living dead, or Shawn of the Dead.

Update 3:

Popular culture zombies are quite different from both voodoo zombies and those of folklore.

The word Zombi is akin to the Haitian word nzambi, which means "god".

One possible origin is jumbie, the West Indian term for "ghost" or "spirit of a dead person."

There are recorded 'zombies' in Voodoo culture.

These tales could originate from witch doctors poisoning people, people with brain damage, or people who have been incorrectly diagnosed as dead.

In my own culture (romany), we have a strong mythology of zombification.

Update 4:

This is why, when we die, we block the nose with wax, so a spirit cannot enter the corpse of the loved one.

Update 5:

Also I was just teasing... the blending of popular culture and mythology is fascinating to me.

Update 6:

They would do so to seek revenge.

Some people use zombie flash mobs to stage political protests.

So you see, the term 'zombie' means all kind of things to different people.

Popular culture might have made it ridiculous and unpleasant, but really it is just a resurected spirit.

I guess, not shining and beautiful, but it doesn't say that in the bible either does it, I would asume they had been buried a while.

There are two issues, one, why did they need to break open the tombs to let their bodies out, if they were just spirits.

I still think there is a timeline issue also.

I am sorry if you think it's frivolous or cruel, I do think zombies are cool though.

Eew, "zombies" is an offensive word to describe the glorious transformation of resurrection.

I take the passage to mean that they were raised when Christ was raised, or immediately afterwards.

The Eastern Orthodox "Resurrection" icon shows a glorified Christ descending to the dead to give them life and glory.

Of course, they accompanied Christ to the Father, as a sign of His triumphant love, and all Heaven rejoiced.

EDIT: Hmm, why do you thinik zombies is a good word to describe them? To me a zombie is mindless, ugly and brain-sucking...not exactly my image of glorious resurrection in a transformed body of light. I guess I've only heard the word zombie used as a mocking of Christ's resurrection, which I find a disrespectful use.

    Matthew 27

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

This event, the resurrection of others, took place right after Christ's resurrection just as it states. They were not resurrected at his death. Thus, Christ became the first fruits, the first born, the first begotten of the dead.....

Christ is the first one to be resurrected to an immortal life.

    Acts 26

23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

    1 Corinthians 15

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

    Col. 1

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

    Rev. 1

5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.

So they were not waiting around, other than as spirits awaiting a glorious resurrection(waiting for their spirit to be reunited with their restored physical bodies) when Christ was resurrected (when his spirit was reunited with his physical body).

I was going along with you OK and then I read Dexter's answer and he says that they have to eat flesh in order to be zombies. Didn't Jesus say Drink of This for this is my blood and eat of this for this is my flesh? I think so. Therefore .... ZOMBIES! And where do they get their clothes?

    Aberzombie & Fitch? Tee hee.

Sorry ... this is a somber moment indeed.

But then, as I read deeper into the many answers with Bible Quotes I realized from these quotes that Jesus was the One ... the First Born as the one quote recited ... so NOW I'm fading from Zombies and going toward Vampires. Blood drinking and all. Hmmm.

So, what the Bible was saying according to Someone Who Cares, and I cut & paste the quote: Christ is the first one to be resurrected to an immortal life.

    Acts 26

Immortal life ... the first ... drink of my blood ... VAMPIRES ... plain and simple.

So, you see? All this Zombie trash is just that. How DARE you define Christ's apostles as Zombies! They were, in fact, Vampires, who followed the head Vampire, Jesus, "Thus, Christ became the first fruits, the first born, the first begotten of the dead....." as per Someone Who Cares, once again.

Wow, I'm suddenly inspired to become a Born Again, Again Christian,

Again, now that I have this NEW information.

And ve shall walk below the Halo of the Full Moon, forever immortal. (Dracula 2000:7:1-2)

    Yessssssssssssssss, I see!

    I am Renewed.

No wonder the Catholics REFUSED to let people drink of the Chalice of Blood until just a few years ago. They were afraid to create more Vampires but then lately, with the Vampire Shortage and all, the Catholics once again allowed people to drink the blood of the Chalice of Life.

There ya go ... this is just ANOTHER reason why I do not subscribe to religions. MY God is Vampire and Zombie FREE ... VZ Lite so to speak.

I don't know what form of spell you put on these Xians to get them to confess their inner secrets but GOOD JOB GLOW! You did it. They have spoken the truth and now they are all cleansed.

Pardon me ... is that a spot of jam on your neck ... hold still ... let me lick it off ....

    Muhhh ... hahaha! ((((((chomp))))

Ahhhhhhhh ... so tasty too ...

Come, let us wander into the night ... it IS night there right now yes? Close enough. I'll even let you have the first gulp.

    I AM

no longer Dartagnon /... but the newly resurrected

    VAMPIRE DARTAGNON ...

also known as Dartagnon V to his inside friends ... you may call me "DV" for short. You may NOT call Vampire Dartagnon by his initials ... it is FORBIDDEN!

    (((sniff))) ........................(((sniff))) ..... blooooood? :-[

You have a misquote here. They were raised to life and visited many people.

Here it is: 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

They became extras on "Night Of The Living Dead".

  • 1 decade ago

    They were undead

If they did not eat human flesh, they were merely undead, not zombies.

    Why don't people understand?

    Zombies feed on brains...

    Apparently, they found zero brains...
