A connotation is when a word reminds you of something else, where you know in the context of the sentence it doesn't really mean the exact word the author has used, but similar to a symbol.
Such as; "All the worlds problems are raining down on me" of course they can't actually be 'raining' but it gives the reader an understanding of how the author is feeling.
Not sure about all of the words, given that there's no context, but I'll give it a go
1) Garden is probably a big open space that's well organised
2) Rain for me means purity, cleanness and freshness, but it could be really depressing as though all the worlds problems are raining down.
3) Diploma is obviously something which has been achieved but whether it's an actual piece of paper (certificate) or just a sense of satisfaction on the completion of a task you would have to work out yourself based on the context
4) Mountain can be seen in two different ways; it can be a task which seems almost impossible (as in standing at the foot of a mountain looking at the task ahead) or it can be something you have achieved (standing at the top of a mountain)
5) Lace usually means something delicate but really detailed and intricate.
hope this makes sense
