hey guys!!! a small doubt.about neil armstrong.....please help....?

ok guys.....we had an elocution competition in our school....so my classmate spoke about neil armstrong.....he told that neil armstrong did not set his foot on the moon at all....he specified that many scientists believe that it was just a scam planned by USA to increase its popularity....the evidence is that the flag which neil armstrong planted on the moon could be clearly seen flying whereas in reality there is no air on the moon.....and even the direction of the sun according to some scientists is wrong.....so guys i need ur opinion about this.....is this a rumour or the truth

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR SPENDING UR VALUABLE TIME IN ANSWERING MY QUESTION

Your classmates are very very wrong. The SIX moon landings are some of the most documented events in history. Thousands of people took part in the effort and several different countries helped out. Like Australia and England.

All of the various conspiracy theories have been debunked many times. The bad astronomy web site has good info here:

    http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

Also Neil Armstrong left something on the moon that we still use today-- a MIRROR that we bounce laser beams off of to measure the moon's distance.

    http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/21jul_llr....

How do you suppose it got there pointed straight at Earth? Magic?

No, Neil Armstrong put it there pointed toward Earth.

the problem is basic. Some people look at the lighting and assume the pictures were faked. Here on Earth we have one light source, the sun. However on the moon you have two light sources, the Sun and light reflected from the Earth. The Earth is highly reflective so you get extra shadows. There are also dunes on the moon, which may depending upon what direction an astronaut faces, cause shadows that appear wrong. As for wind, the moon has little atmosphere, but is rotating on its axis as rotating around the Earth. There is also something called the solar wind, so there are reasons for a flag to waver a little. Also left behind on the moon was a small reflector array, used by astronomical observatories here on Earth to measure the moons' distance from the Earth. This is because the moon does wobble a little on its own orbit.

As for all those "experts" who claim it was faked, who are they? What are their scientific/educational credentials? Many of the "faked moon landing" publications will make claims of "leading scientific experts" agreeing with their assertions, but do not name these scientists. These publications will normally claim that these scientists work for NASA/JPL/Military etc, and that they cannot name these scientists. Any legitimate scientist knows that no theory/assertion will ever be accepted with no named scientist showing proof of it. A scientific finding must have a scientist showing the proof attached to the findings.

People landed on the Moon. This question is asked repeatedly in this section and you could have searched for it.

    Anyway:

There were plans to visit Mars afoot at the end of the '70s. These did not materialise. If the Moon landings are fake, why did NASA not go on to fake the much more impressive Mars missions?

The men who are said to have walked on the Moon have damage to their eyes in a manner which could be caused only by the type of radiation found in space outside the immediate neighbourhood of the Earth. Hence they were either exposed to the radiation artificially or they went that far.

Thousands of people were involved in designing the rockets, the command modules and the lunar modules. All of these definitely existed, or one would be forced to conclude that those thousands of people were all involved in the conspiracy and kept it secret regardless of the money and fame available to them if they blew the whistle.

There are mirrors on the Moon which were placed there during the Apollo missions. Astronomers all over the world use them regularly.

There are photographs of the landing sites via the Hubble Space Telescope which reveal the same features as the astronauts noted, but which were not visible to telescopes on the ground, the only kind in existence at the time.

Signals passed between the tracking stations and the spacecraft which went to the Moon and there was a delay. My father has sound recordings of these on reel-to-reel tapes and i've heard them. I also, like everyone else, watched the landings live on TV. There was a delay in the signals.

The landings happened at a time when authority was much less trusted than it is today, but no-one questioned them at the time.

The situation is therefore as follows:

Astronauts were exposed to the kind of radiation which exists far beyond low-Earth orbit.

The rockets, lunar modules and command modules were all built.

Signals were sent which took an appropriate amount of time to go up to the spacecraft and back. Therefore, the astronauts' voices were either recorded and the whole thing was scripted or they were actually on the spacecraft. If they were still on Earth, the delay would have been longer.

The only conclusion which is even slightly plausible other than that they landed on the Moon is this: astronauts travelled to the Moon, orbited it and dropped the lunar modules as automatic probes. However, that would mean that the technical feat of landing and taking off again was what defeated them, which belies the known specifications of the lunar modules. Again, a large number of people were involved in building and designing them and you'd have to assume they were all lying.

Therefore, people landed on the Moon.

Well I can help you understand the flag myth. See on earth once we push something say a shopping trolley it will stop moving after sometime because the air in our atmosphere (also the friction between the tires and the ground) slows the trolley down until it stops. But since there is no or very less air on the moon once you push something it will never stop. Its the first law (or was it the second) law of motion.

So when neil armstrong inserted the flag pole in the ground on the moon he probably made some twisting motions (to make sure the flag was in the ground properly i guess). Now once the flag was set in motion it would stop after a very long time due to lack of atmosphere. Also there was a metal rod inserted on the top along the length of the flag.

watch the season 6 episode 10 of mythbusters which explains all these things in detail here http://www.sidereel.com/MythBusters

Neil Armstrong really walked on the Moon. Buzz Aldrin really walked on the Moon with him. So did ten other astronauts on subsequent missions. When the flag moves, it's often because an astronaut is handling the flagpole. There is also video where the flag waves after the Lunar Module lifts off because the exhaust from the ascent engine is blowing it. Also the flag sometimes appears to be waving in photographs because there are wrinkles in it.

Ask your classmate this one question:

Since there were about 300,000 to 400,000 people working on the Moon project at NASA, JPL, and the various contractors who made the stuff the astronauts used to go to the Moon, then why hasn't ONE SINGLE PERSON stepped forward to write a book exposing the so-called hoax?

After all, this person would be filthy rich from book deals, movie deals, TV Specials, the talk show circuit, and the fame and fortune that would come with exposing this alleged hoax.

To put this into perspective, in 1972, 6 burglars broke into the Watergate hotel during an election season. Keep in mind there were only *6 people* involved. Even somebody as powerful as President Nixon could not be keep this a secret- keeping in mind that there were only 6 people. Does your misinformed friend truly think that 300,000-400,000 people could keep quiet? Yeah, right...

    Your friend is delusional.

Neil Armstrong did in fact set foot on the Moon. The conspiracy theory has been proved to be just that, "a conspiracy theory." The Moon does in fact have an atmosphere, just not much of one. That in part could explain the flag moving. But mostly when Niel unfurled the flag it was just still moving from being unfurled. Also Mythbusters have done extensive experiments trying to see if they could simulate walking on the Moon with today's modern technology and couldn't come close. So it would be impossible to have done it with the special effects and technology of 40 years ago.

Forgot to mention that Niel Armstrong also positioned a mirror on the Moon that we still use today to accurately measure the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

I dare your friend to give the name of even ONE credible "scientist." He will not be able to do it. If he can even find a name of a real person, it will not be a scientist.

The Scientific Community knows for a fact that all 6 moon landings were not fake at all. Do you want to know why?? Because the scientists use their brains and know that all the 'moon landing is fake hoax claims' are not true because real science has debunked each and every one of these claims, and PROVED that the moon landings are real using scientific evidence. One of the best sites to show you this has been given above at the clavius site.

For myself, I saw it live on TV at the time that it happened and I will never forget it. It was real. TV and Movie makers did not have the ability to do the things that these hoaxers are pushing.

It is a blatant lie, created by people who are as blind as ignorant for simple physics.

You can get him with just two photographs already, shot just seconds apart:

    http://history.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5874.jpg

    http://history.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5875.jpg

As you can see, the flag did not move at all between the two photographs. It thus can't be flying in any kind of wind, it is not moving at all. All that keeps it upright is a metal bar at the top edge of it, because the astronauts had trouble unfolding this bar completely, the flag was not smooth, but slightly crumpled. This looked much better as intended, so all later missions "failed" unfolding the flag completely.

You only see the flag move when or shortly after astronauts touched it, for example when they rammed the flag pole into the soil. The Mythbusters had also shown in experiment, that this movement of the flag shows that it really was done in vacuum: When there is even just a bit of air around, the resistance of the air dampens any oscillation of the flag: It stops moving way faster as it does in the film.

Also many scientists is a lie as well. There is not a single scientist claiming so. The only moon hoax proponent who had an academic education in his life was Keysing. He was Bachelor (the lowest possible academic title in the USA) of Arts. He studied the English language and worked for a rocket engine manufacturer, with the task to edit technical manuals and archive them in the companies library...he left the company already in 1963, before the Apollo project really started, but claimed to have worked on it as engineer...

PS: Please, if you have the chance to attend school (not all people have this luck), learn writing proper English, especially since you have the time for writing slowly here. Chatspeak is just annoying and makes it pretty hard for people whose native language is NOT english to follow you.

Flag Waving: I don't see it waving at all >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMINSD7MmT4

The only motion it has is when the astronauts touch it. It comes to "rest" slower on the moon that in would on Earth because there is less gravity, and no atmosphere (friction/air resistance) to bring it to a standstill sooner. It rocks like a steady pendulum... conservation of angular momentum.

I haven't heard specifically the "direction of the sun" claim, however, the Clavius Moon Base website is one of the most through moon landing hoax -debunking sites there is >> http://www.clavius.org/
