Is Amana (Goodman) a reputable furnace brand?
We just bought our first home knowing we had to replace the oil furnace with a gas furnace. We received five quotes - two from Carrier installers and three from Amana/Goodman installers. We went with a high efficiency, variable speed Amana because it was $1000 less and had the same ten-year warranty (as far we could tell). I've read complaints about all the furnace brands, but Goodman seems to have a particularly bad reputation. Did we screw-up or does it matter?
(Not sure why I'm asking because it's basically too late. The installers are already working.)

Years ago, most of the major air conditioning and heating manufacturers manufactured their own equipment in house, or at least a majority of the comonents. I know Carrier, Lennox and Trane manufactured their own compressors and each brand was distinguishable because of how they built their systems and which components they used. Today, however, it's almost impossible to tell the difference between brands. In fact, if you disassembled the equipment and laid the components next to each other, you wouldn't know the difference between brands. One exception is that American Standard/Trane still manufacture their own compressors. If the equipment is sized correctly and installed properly, you should get many, many years of satisfactory performance from your Goodman equipment.

You ever heard of Bryant? That is the company that also makes the Goodman units. Amana is a tried and true company that has produced quality air conditioners for years and years.

It's a lower end brand, but as long as you do your home owner maintnence and the warrenty is good I say go for it. Read the fine print in that warrenty.
