Can people be employed with temporary contracts in the UK?

Having a limited company, are you allowed to employ people for a short period? for example, give them a 6 or 10 months contract?

Can this contracts be renewed when they expire. And would it be easy to terminate the employment of this person when his contract expires?

Yes you can subject to the Fixed Term Employee Regulations 2002 which aim to give fixed term contract workers the same rights as permanent contract workers.

Amongst other rights, they will be entitled to the same holiday and sick pay as permanent workers for example.

You must have a genuine reason for the contractcs to be temporary or fixed term.

If you are using these contracts to avoid employing people for more than a year when they would obtain full employment rights under employment law to take you to a Tribunal for unfair dismissal for instance, don't bother, you won't stand a chance. Provisions have been made to prevent the spirit of the legislation from being abused in this way.

Yes, contracts can be anything, they can be months or years.

My dad was contracted for 6 months to start with, and ending up working with the company for 5 years, they just kept renewing his contract until they decided to stop it.

Im started my current job on a 6 wk contract, which thankfully has been extended...

So yes you can have short fixed term contracts, however the shorter the length the lower the overall quality of workers you will attract. Although in the current climate people will probably biting your arm off for any sort of job!!!

You could hire contractors/ temp workers to come into your company who just work for as long as you need them. As they either work self-employed or through an agency you don't need to give much notice just tell them DCBM.
