Creatine is used at a molecular level of energy consumption when working out. Studies there have been many studies done on creatine supplementation that you could find for free at PubMed, and online peer-reviewed database of scholarly journals. From what I have been told by my professors in college, creatine is not a long lasting energy source like carbohdates are, in fact creatine, when running at maximum capacity is completely depleted after 150-200 meters. So obviouslt creatine supplementation is of no real use to anyone planning on running further than 200 meters.
Another thought I think I should add to this answer is that often times the supplements do not contain the correct levels of creatine or whey that is labeled on the bottle. Scientist have taken supplements into the lab and broken them down from pill form to measure their proportions of ingredients. Often times there is much less creatine or whey in the supplement than is listed on the bottle. And since the FDA does not monitor dietary supplements the results on the bottle come from the company that is selling it, which is never a reliable source because they really want to sell the product more than worry about the contents.

b-love has a great answer......it is true that creatine only lasts for the first 30 seconds of activity then is completely depleted until you stop activity.....so for a marathon, creatine is a waste of money

Creatine is most useful for building muscle bulk. It won't benefit your running. Additionally, because of the need for large amounts of water when using creatine, you could possibly have hydration issues.

I tried to take creatine during rugby a few years back. Gave me cramps in my hamstrings and calves. I stopped taking it.
