am I using this word correctly?

I don't want to ask for any financial aid because I feel that I will ameliorate from these weekend trips by gaining rare perspective of the world that will benefit me almost as much as the children I work with.

    For "ameliorate" use "benefit". Ameliorate means to lessen the severity of; benefit means to gain from.

    you don't want to ask for financial aid because it will make the weekend trips (ameliorate) better?

    why would you ask for financial aid to get weekend trips anyway if you dont have the money you can ask other people to combine their money with yours.
