If you have a housekeeper, do your kids do chores, clean up after themselves?

Do they just expect the housekeeper to automatically clean up after them?

I'm a working mom so I felt I needed help around the house but I'm scared my kids will think that it's OK to not pick up after themselves.

I clean a family's house once a week and they have two little kids and a teenager. It PISSES me OFF when the kids, especially the teenager, doesn't clean up their stuff.

I don't mind vacuuming their bedrooms or changing the sheets; that's in my job description. But I don't know where all the toys go, and I don't want to go through the teen's stuff, so I'm stuck.

What they expect and what they will get are two different things. You need to set the rules. Your kids should be picking up after themselves right now and continue to do so. Getting a housekeeper, by the way, is not a license to be a slovenly. Often a housekeeper comes in a couple of hours a couple of times a week and does limited things, such as vacuuming and general cleaning. Maybe some laundry. You need to clearly define what she is expected to do and for how long. She will probably also tell you what she does and doesn't do, by the way.

I dont see anything wrong with having a housekeeper AND having kids do chores at the same time.

How many moms would refuse to hire a maid if they hit the big lottery? Not many. There's nothing wrong with having help. My kids never do their chores. They do their chores maybe twice a year. I wished I had more help. I feel like I am my childrens slaves, and my hubby works all the time.

Your kids will only think that it is all right to make a mess for the housekeeper if you let them. They still need to have chores and to pick up after themselves.
