Help about classical singing and suggestions for a good college audition repertoire?
Hello! Yes, I have asked a lot about this college thing here... Well, but here goes the truth. I have taken voice lessons since I was 11 and I have always focused on popular music. I never wanted to do anything related to classical due to my mother and grandmother's constant brainwash of 'you'll damage your vocal chords if you sing like that'. I'm very good singing popular music and I really want to enter a college of music, but all of those I've looked for require the student to sing art songs in order to be accepted. So I decided to take lessons once more, but this time focus on classical. But here's the thing, my new teacher knows less about music than I do and she focuses on popular music, she does not correct my mistakes unless I notice I'm doing something wrong and the 2 lessons I have had with her, I have ended up like with my throat irritated. And another thing is that she is the first teacher to rank my voice as mezzo soprano when the teacher I had a few months before had ranked me as a soprano as well as all of the teachers I always had (also everyone who knows about music and listens to me speak says this; I sound like a little girl when I speak). You see, I really don't know what type is my voice, since I never sang classical (I mean, I know my register [F3-D6], but that's it). To me, it is hard to sing low, but also it is hard to sing high! I mean, how can I reach all these notes doing warm up exercizes with the piano and can't sing them in songs? The best teacher I ever had (she sadly left the place and I have never found her again :( ) told me that this was due to my tension and insecurity and that I put my tongue in the way of the air, and therefor I 'trap' the sound inside of me. My reason to write all these? Ok, the college of my dreams asks for 3 classical songs and I'm so not good at this; it's hard and often painful, so I really don't like to practice because of fear of damaging my voice. My teacher doesn't help me, since she doesn't know about the classical style and I need some guidance (I'm getting a new teacher soon). What songs are easy, but enough to get me into a college of music? The college is the Eastman school of music. I will apply to others too, in case I can't make it. Can you suggest a college that doesn't ask for students to sing classical? I'm pretty sure I can be accepted by singing R&B and such popular styles.
Please, help me! And thanks for reading all this info...

You're not going to get into Eastman singing classical music if you're just starting to learn it now. You need to find a teacher that knows classical style really well... pop voice teachers do more harm than good teaching you bad habits. A good teacher will be able to help you find audition pieces that will show off your range comfortably.
