transplant patient and pets?
I was told by my surgeon that I may be a candidate for a pancreas transplant. I understand that transplant patients have to be on lifelong immunosupressant drugs. What I am curious about is where that leaves my pets. I have quite a few...dogs, a cat, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish...I was wondering if I was going to have to get rid of some of them! I am most concerned about the parrot, because no one but me handles him. I could get other family members to help out with the "dirtier" jobs with the other animals, but no one else will play with the bird, so I am afraid I will have to rehome him. Anyone knowledgeable and know the answer? Thanks!

This is a sad and testing situation. Your best bet would be to talk to friends. If they are willing to take care of one or two animals while you are gone (meaning actually taking them into their home and giving them proper attention), this would be the least stressful on you because you know you can trust them.
As far as the bird goes, try looking into local shelters or pet stores that care for or sell birds. Maybe you can talk to an employee or volunteer and explain your situation to them. The worst that could happen is that they decline, and it's definitely worth a try.
Good luck!
