TRYING TO UPGRADE MY HARD DRIVE FROM 5GB TO 80 GB?

I HAVE AN OLD IBM APTIVA WITH A 5GB HARD DRIVE.

IM TRYING TO INSTALL A 80GB HARD DRIVE FROM MY EMACHINE THAT WENT UP.

I SET THE 80 GB HARD DRIVE AS A SLAVE AND STARTED WINDOWS.

I WENT TO DISK MANAGEMENT AND FOUND THE HARD DRIVE BUT IT WONT INITIALIZE.

I TRIED TO MAKE IT THE MASTER BUT THE COMPUTER WONT READ THE HARD DRIVE AT ALL ONLY AS A SLAVE.

I WANT TO USE THE 80 AS MY MAIN DRIVE AND THE 5 FOR WINDOWS XP HOME ONLY. IM WILLING TO LOOSE THE 5 ALL TOGETHER. WHAT CAN I DO TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE?

It's really tough to have 2 drives with XP that dual boots if that's what you're planning. Some older machines will not accept a drive that large but it's worth a try.

I would set the 80 gig drive jumper as master and forget about the 5 gig. It's not worth the trouble to have 5 extra gigs.

You will need to reformat the 80 gig and install Windows fresh however.

You probably need to add the drive in the computer bios if this is a really old computer. You can get to the BIOS when you reboot by pressing the proper key. For some keys to try if you do not already know the proper one you can press F10, or F11, or F2, or DEL. Once you have access to the BIOS you can set it to know the new drive is installed. If you have a really old pc it may not be able to read a drive of that size. A search of the ibm website shows some downloads for upgrades for the BIOS. You may want to look into that but be careful as it can leave your computer totally useless if not done correctly.

For a machine with a hard disk that old it might not recognise more than 32GB of the new disk.

This is because older disk controllers and BIOS chips simply don't have the ability to work with these more up-to date disks.

Google "hard drive - 32GB limitation".

You will find software that can run on the system at a low level to make the large hard drive compatible.

Perhaps the 80 is not compatible with the machine. There are different types of hard drive

    Did you set the jumpers?

Try taking your Caps Lock key off, that was painful to read.

It simply may not be compatable given its age. Also, turn your caps lock off!!!!!
