Which Event in History Was Worse In Your Opinion:?
American slavery of African Americans or the Holocaust against Jews (amongst others)?
I've always wondered about this because in my previous history classes (from middle school to my college world history courses) we always spent much longer talking about slavery. My history books only contained a few paragraphs about the Holocaust while slavery took up chapters at a time.

Leigh, Great Question ! Sorry that this is so long, I just am very intrigued by this subject. I love history! I think the Holocaust was way worst. And if you want to know why I think this, please refer to the novel I have provided below for your reading pleasure!
Just for the record, slavery and the holocaust were low points in human history, and I am not defending either one, they were both horrible, but here is a few things that the history books might not have told you !
Us Americans did not sail a ship to Africa and just round up a bunch of Africans and take them back to our plantation whip them and make them slaves. They were already slaves when we bought them from European slave traders or they were enslaved by African tribes like the Zulu. They were responsible for making those people slaves to begin with! And we are responsible for continuing to make them slaves after they arrived in America. (one more thing to consider, most of the slaves that got to come over to America were probably a lot happier here than in Africa. Africa has always been savage, and the tribes there have always been at war. Although they were slaves, and there were horror stories about slavery in America, it wasn't all horrible, not everyone treated there slave badly. It was still wrong of American's none the less.
Now the holocaust to me was much much worst on a grand scale. That was fueled by Hitler's hatred for jews probably for the same reason that for the last 2009 years,Jew's have been persicuted and hated by many of differant people around the world primarily because, THEY WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF GUESS WHO...........JESUS CHRIST, and with 3 million or maybe more Christians and Catholics in this world, (Hitler being one of them) that is probably what made Hitler hate Jews to begin with, let alone the Jews owned everything in Germany at that time, they raised the rents and made it hard for the Germans, they were very rich and all of the others were poor and starving, that probably had a lot to do with why he did what he did, again I am not condoning it at all. Because that was just down right twisted what he did at the death camps. It is unimaginably evil.
thank you for reading that novel, sorry for making people have to scroll down this page for a long time to get past my book here!!!!

History is biased, you'll hear emphasis on every bad turn in history with different books and historians. It all comes down to how the individual analyzes the event and how they think of it because there is not a single event that can be called the worst of the worst. In my opinion, what makes an event one of the worse is what happens in the event (obviously) but also the aftermath (consequences and benefits)
For instance the Holocaust, if it were not for that event, we would not have had the Nuremberg Trials and coin the term 'genocide' and make it into a crime. So clearly yes, all those Jews dying made it an ugly mark in history, but in terms of the impact of the future, I find it has helped mankind. But I shall not speak further upon the Holocaust for I know someone will comment back vehemently to my comment otherwise.
In my opinion, one of the worse events in History would be when Nero burned down the Colosseum. Yes, way back when during the emperors of Rome. My case in this is because during this time, Christianity was a cult, hardly a religion. Nero used the Christians as the scapegoat and accused them of the debacle of the Colosseum. It was just one of the most earliest and gruesome persecutions and a turning point in religious history. I also believe that this event is the worse because it set Christianity on a course to become one of the world's most common religions. Thus, it created gruesome consequences, such as the political turmoils England has suffered (with what the Protestants and Catholics and the Crusades).
However, I don't find it the worse. Anyone can argue back things like the World Wars (although I see much benefit from them because of weapons technology advancement), Cold War, Slavery throughout history etc. etc.
It really is a very general question and up to the opinion of the individual. ^^
(Although between Holocaust and slavery, I'd say Slavery, because slavery took the whole 'subhumans' thing to the next level. Jews were just denounced by Germans and killed. Africans were chained, forced into labour up to the point that it was cheaper to buy a new slave then to have him recover, AND flogged, beaten, and killed for no just reason, and started since the bloom of colonialism. Then even after slavery ended, there was prejudice and extreme racism towards Africans which wasn't attended to until after our Civil War, and even now lingers).

Probably because you were studying American History, which slavery is a big part of. World History should have covered the Holocaust thoroughly. However, it is not a popularity contest. In reality, I'm sure many many more people were killed in the Holocaust, so in that context it was worse. But in any situation where people are being treated brutally is wrong, no question.

The Holocaust was much worse! Jews were literally slaughtered like animals in the most cruel and painful ways possible.
If you are interested then look up some documentaries on the TV or internet and read some history books.
Both events were awful but the Holocaust was worse by a mile.
EDIT: You should watch the film 'Schindler's List', this portrays events in the Holocaust fairly accurately.

Genocides have been and are taking place in many countries throughout the world, and are not restricted to the Jews Holocaust
as strong media lobbying would infer.
Genocides in Darfur, Rwanda, Serbia and perhaps Srilanka have been cited in the past 20 years.
As for the holocaust, let us not forget one of its tragic consequences which was the establmishment of the state of Israel over the land of Palestine with its sad regional and global repercussions.
This was a tragic moment in modern history.

Well, slavery happened for hundreds of years. It became an integral part of the American economy, also one of the primary political factors in America from the 17th century to the 19th. We struggled with it, pro- vs anti- for more than 100 years before finally fighting a war that nearly tore the country apart to abolish it. You can't really understand US history, even in colonial America, without a good understanding of slavery, the arguments for and against, who was on which side, how people voted, Constitutional struggles, etc.
The Nazi Holocaust, by comparison, was a brief, violent event, almost like a sudden bout of mental illness that the patient then gets over quickly.
Plus, of course, slavery happened here and the Holocaust happened elsewhere. Something tells me, though, that modern German schoolchildren don't learn about the holocaust the way we learn about slavery.

To me, the holocaust was the worst thing that ever happened anywhere.
But to provide some perspective for your question: There are American history courses, and there are world history courses. America has had a short history, and for us, the Civil War was hugely significant. The world has had a long history, and the curriculum demands that it all be squeezed into one book.

The Holocaust by a long shot. When some maniac tries to wipe some ethnic groups off the planet, that is pure evil in my mind.
Slavery?? Every ethnic group has had slavery in their background throughout history. Even white backgrounds. Did they teach you that those Americans who came to America and could NOT pay their passageway, were SOLD INTO SLAVERY. These p-eople included ALL ethnicities.

The Holocaust but some say the African slave trade was also a Holocaust so who knows. It's over it happened a long time ago and I sleep like a baby at night.

i feel the holocaust was far worse because millions of jews died all over the world were imprisoned starved beaten things of that sort and the jews have delt with that abuse since the old testament times and i dont believe in god so dont think thats swaying my opionion. the blacks had a home food water granted they werent treated well at all but the could run north for freedom jews couldnt and as far as history class goes they cover slavery more becaue it happend here not in europe and the naacp makes it required u cover that so much
