What is an australian Labradoodle?

ok, I can not stand designer breeds, call them what they are. But I just had a person sign up for a puppy k class for her new puppy. When I asked the breed, she very proudly said it was an Australian Labradoodle. I asked, is that an Aussie, Lab, Poodle cross??? Oh no, she said it is an australian labradoodle. So I wrote Lab cross on her registration for, which I don't think she was happy with. But I can not help but wonder, WTH is this new mix? Does any one know? Is she just claiming to have a lab x from Australia? I can't keep up with these crazy mixes, that people pay so much for, and are so proud of. They are mutts people......

Update:

I do know these do not exist. Was just trying to figure out is this a new scam, or one I just hadn't heard of yet?

Update 2:

Poppy, I think you are right on!

THESE ARE NOT A NEW BREED RECOGNIZED BY THE AKC!!!!!!! THEY ARE MUTTS!!!!

Yuck..I can't keep up either, but I believe the greeders are now advertising them as the 'original Labradoodles' or the better ones because they add Australian to the name.

I do know that the mix originated in Australia, where people were attempting to make a low-shedding service dog (though they could have just used Poodles). They saw it wasn't going to work, and abandoned the project. If only the greeders could do the same.

The initial "labradoodle" breeding program was in Australia and was well intentioned and directed at creating a breed which would excel at service work and not aggravate allergies. However, after years of the breeder trying to make it work, he realized it wasn't feasible, and that the pups would not breed true to any standard even after many generations there were still pups who shed, and had the double coated labrador coat. So they abandoned the program, deemed it a failure and then the BYB's and mills picked up on the idea and made it into a designer dog completely ignoring the fact that their claims to a hypo-allergenic dog were completely unfounded, and proven to be false.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/8079809/A-Poodle-for-Oba...

"According to the PCA’s “Report to the Media on Poodle Rescue,” “Labradoodles were first produced in Australia in 1989 through an experimental breeding program sponsored by the Royal Guide Dog Association. The goal of this experiment was to produce a dog more suitable for disabled individuals with allergies than the typical Labrador Retriever. The Association believed that by crossing the steady temperament of the Lab with the Standard Poodle, with its low shedding coat, a solution for this small population of people would be found. Upon analysis of the breeding program however, it was found that fewer than 35% of the labradoodles produced were acceptable as guide dogs and an even lower percentage were found to be ‘hypoallergenic.’ The last labradoodle bred to attempt to become a guide dog was born in 1996 and the Association has no plans to continue the experiment.”

    Edit to add:

You know, its easy to be overly judgmental on the owner of the dog. I'm sorry, but some people flat out just do not know the difference between reputable breeders and crap breeders. Yes, in a perfect world everyone would do hours of research, and be armed with all the knowledge to get the right dog from the right place but honestly, how many of us didn't know any better at some point? Who of us has bought a dog from a BYB, or fed low quality food before knowing that there were better options available? It doesn't make someone a bad person, or a complete and utter idiot because they didn't know any better. I never would have found this site or others like it if I didn't already have my dog and started getting interested in learning more about dogs in general. When I got my dog, I just picked the first one from the first litter of mutts (yes, MUTTS) I went to see. he was cute, and looked healthy enough to me so thats all I took into account. I just didn't know any better, and I don't think that makes me a horrible person, just someone who hadn't met the right people yet to teach me what to look for, and where to find it. I wanted a dog right away, and didn't know or care about the value in waiting for the right dog from a reputable breeder.

Next time through, I will do things much differently but it doesn't change the fact that I love my dorky mutt with bum hips. The important thing is to educate those who don't know, not make them feel like scum. I am sure this woman loves her dog and honestly thinks that "labradoodles" are a legitimate "breed." If she chooses to learn more about her dog, she too will realize the errors she made. Just wait til she tries to get this one wet and all of his fur mats almost instantaneously. =)

Unfortunately, the overwhelming desire of some for instant gratification will keep the crappy breeders in business. It doesn't matter if its mutts or purebreds, those who want a dog and can't be bothered to wait for the right one will shell out the money for one and deal with the consequences of poor breeding later. That, or they will dump the dog when they get sick of it, or *gasp* when their doodle starts to shed. Its a frustrating cycle, and hopefully one day people will all know the facts ahead of time, and make better informed decisions on what kind of dog to bring home. I wish I had known then what i know now, but still wouldn't trade my yellow dork for the world.

ROTFLMFA at Robin: WHICH AKC recognized this mutt? It sure as hell wasn't the American Kennel Club...they DON'T register mutts...this dog is NOT a "new breed", it's a mutt.

To the asker: Lab cross is EXACTLY what you should have put down. I can't even make myself say these ridiculous mutt "names" out loud...it makes me sick to think of how many people have been scammed by scum into buying this "breed".

probably an Australian shepherd mixed with lab and poodle. A fancy name for a mutt.

To robinnhillk, please show me where on the AKC website or anywhere for that matter, it shows that a labradoodle is recognized by the AKC.

People get very upset when you call a mutt a mutt after they have paid thousands of dollars for one.

  • Some people call Labradoodles "Australian" because they were originally bred in Australia as part of a project to breed non-shedding guide dogs. The project failed and was abandoned.

  • Shes yet another ignorant gullible, Backyard breeder buyer. It doesnt matter how convincing she may seem, Shes wrong. Plain and simple. Her dog is the product of poor, irresponsible, selfish breeding, and she has simply fallen for their trap.

This dog is as you have said, is an Aussie, Lab, and poodle cross. Nothing special. Its just like any other dog at the shelter waiting for a home.

Add: So yes, this is a scam, Stick with your gut feeling about this, you already knew from the beginning it was wrong.
