Stopping Nails Bleeding - What Are Your Experiences Kwik Stop Styptic Powder?

I have 2 Dobermann Show Dogs and have to keep their nails trimmed regularly.

Occasionally they move when getting their nails done and I have caused bleeding - I have tried corn starch / soap & another styptic product but they take a while to stop the blood.

(both are VwD clear so that is not an issue - just in case you want to mention that because they are Dobes)

I have searched Australia for the KwikStop Powder product recommended to me by an American friend and it is not available here. I am about to purchase some from the states and have it shipped here but would like to know if it is as good as she said.

Please share your experiences and any other solutions you may know of for stopping a dogs nail bleeding.

Many thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for your answers.

Update:

I have a top quality Dremel which I also use on 1 of the dogs - the other I have no chance of using it on (as she hates it - no matter how much I have tried to get her used to it LOL) with her I just use the clippers to take a tiny bit off the tips every 2 weeks.

Even the Dremel can cause bleeding - the bleeding is minor but I would like to stop it straight away as I have cream coloured carpets and even a small bleed can leave the loungeroom looking like there has been a massacre - joking =)

Ah yes, the infamous short Doberman nails. I say infamous, because I had my dog staying with a Doberman person once, she used a dremel tool to take her nails down to stubs, when I was having to slowly cut them back, because her previous owners had let them grow out. Can't even touch her feet, the poor dear.

But yes, the product is great, I've used it before on my dogs. I try not to cut the too close, but when you're dealing with those crazy large dogs, it gets hard sometimes. Especially when I have eight of them.

But if getting some shipped to you is expensive, see if you can find this stuff called 'EMT Gel' around it works as well, only once when my mom accidently removed one dog's whole nail almost, the EMT gel stopped the bleeding, where the kwick stop failed.

It's also handy to have around, if your dog gets cut and is bleeding a lot, because it stops the bleeding, and helps cuts to rapidly heal.

Kwik-Stop is a good product and I own it, but sometimes I just grab the Dremel or scissor-type nail cutters thinking I won't cut too close. Well, it happens to the best of us, and on a Great Dane, that can be a lot of blood.

I cut too short once and while racing to the kennel room for the Kwik-Stop, I went through the kitchen and saw a container of Metamucil Fiber Supplement, a powder that bulks up stools. I put a pinch on the end of the nail and it clotted INSTANTLY. Now I keep a 35mm film cannister of Metamucil on hand, too.

When i did that with my dog, i threw flour on the floor and he walked threw it a couple of times, and the bleeding instantly stopped.

And I work at an S.P.C.A, where we do surgery, and during the surgery, we clip there nails, and once i clipped it too short, and got the kwik, If you have any gauze wrap the gauze around the nail that is bleeding, and squeeze right under the cut, for a couple of minutes, and it instantly stops.

Kwik Stop has always worked quite well for me. It's pretty much the standard for groomers/show exhibitors in the USA.

im not sure but in the mean time, if you can find a nic stick for people, in the mens shaving cream section , that has the same ingrediants as the stuff your looking for. Also ive found that just dipping the paw in a mixture of flour and water paste works just as well.

Kwik Stop works great. This is a *must have* for any dog owner.

Source(s): Use to show and breed Dobes for 25 years, myself. Nice to hear that you have 2 clears!

Use a battery operated file. There like 20 bucks at petsmart.

  • That's what I always use. Works great.
