I am located in Sydney Australia and am the proud owner of 2 Dobermanns ages 2yrs & 7yrs who are both Show Dogs. We attend dog shows most weekends and enjoy spending time with other dog lovers, breeders and show people. I am pro tail docking and am sick and tired of tree-hugging hippy do-gooders who stick their noses in to change laws about issues they don't have a clue about! I own well bred pedigree Dobermanns and I have a right to have my dogs the way the original creator of the breed intended. It is not cruel when done by a responsible breeder, what is cruel is leaving the tail on to get damaged and require docking later in life. I feed my dogs a strict BARF diet which involves a lot of raw meats veges and bones. I am mainly interested in the questions about dogs but occasionally branch out into other areas to see if I can learn something new.

  • Stopping Nails Bleeding - What Are Your Experiences Kwik Stop Styptic Powder?

I have 2 Dobermann Show Dogs and have to keep their nails trimmed regularly.

Occasionally they move when getting their nails done and I have caused bleeding - I have tried corn starch / soap & another styptic product but they take a while to stop the blood.

(both are VwD clear so that is not an issue - just in case you want to mention that because they are Dobes)

I have searched Australia for the KwikStop Powder product recommended to me by an American friend and it is not available here. I am about to purchase some from the states and have it shipped here but would like to know if it is as good as she said.

Please share your experiences and any other solutions you may know of for stopping a dogs nail bleeding.

Many thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and for your answers.

  • Scurf?? After Bathing my Dobermann -How to avoid it?

    Hi again

I am getting my 2 Doberkidds ready for a Dog Show on Monday (Public Holiday in Australia) and I am trying to avoid getting a very fine white flakey skin after bathing them.

I don't get it every time, just occassionally.

I will run you through all that I am doing and I would appreciate any hints and tips as to what to do to avoid it happening.

I now wash them a couple of days before a show so the oil can hopefully return to the skin and stop the dry skin happening.

I try and wash my dogs when it is hot weather so they don't stay wet for long - no probs there today, it is 40 deg C (110F!) so they will dry in minutes.

I am using an organic dog shampoo especially for Black dogs and I only use the smallest amount and then I rinse it thoroughly.

I then use a tiny bit of conditioner and rinse it thoroughly.

Towel dry and then get them outside (without sitting or rolling! ARRGH LOL) and wait for them to dry completely.

The dry skin only becomes visable once I have them at the show and with the show lead it seems to appear just before going into the ring LMAO! Timing!

My dogs do not wear collars at home I only put one on to take them for a walk twice a day and then at shows.

Is there any products I could be using after a bath that would help this.

I would appreciate any information Breeders / Show People / or any knowledgable people can offer.

    Many thanks in advance

  • Show Dog Preparation - Whisker Face Cheek Sucking?

I am doing the preparation on 2 Dobermann

for a dog show on Monday (Public Holiday in Australia).

I would like to know if anyone has any tips or special secret

(Shh I promise I won't tell anyone - or you can email it LOL)

tricks to trim the whiskers on the face nice and close.

My two have mastered the art of pulling a face so that the whiskers seem to suck right back into their cheeks, so that when I think I am done they smile at me and all the whiskers "poof" appear again!! LOL

It makes me laugh but it is frustrating as I end up having to pull their little cheeks tighter and try and get close in. I would like to do it once instead of 2 or 3 times.

My trimmers are sharp so that isn't the problem -

it is just that they are so good at pulling a sucky face :)

I would appreciate any help from Breeders and Show Dog People.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Do you think PeTa have gone to far? They want to end dog shows on TV - Vote and have your say against PeTa?

Interested in your opinions on this matter.

    To Vote GoTo:

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/unleashed/2009/01/...

The article that appears in the above link:

Back in December, the BBC announced that it wouldn't air the Crufts dog show because of concerns over purebred dogs' health. Earlier this week, we told you that PETA is asking the USA Network, which broadcasts the Westminster Dog Show every February, to follow the BBC's lead and discontinue coverage of America's most prestigious dog show.

We suspected a lot of you would take issue with PETA's premise: that breeding dogs for the show ring locks in genetic defects that, it argues, plague "as many as one in four purebred dogs ... with a serious genetic problem." But we were surprised by just how vocal you were: More than 300 of you have commented on the story so far.

Some of you agreed with PETA. Christine said, "I think it would be great if the USA Network dropped this show. Let's do a special on the USA Network about all the adorable shelter dogs available!" And Carl S chimed in, "PETA is spot on. The AKC is about money and human arrogance, not about what's in the best interest of dogs."

Most of you, though, said the show must go on. "It is a total misconception that mixed breeds are more healthy than purebreds. Responsible breeders routinely screen for health problems. A mixed breed dog has no such testing and can inherit problems from many ancestors," said Janet. And Purebred dog lover mused, "We are now in an era with the animal rightists trying to destroy and discredit breeders of purebred dogs. It must be duly noted that there are no health statistics kept on mixed breeds, just on purebred dogs. Who knows how many mixed breeds die of disease or breed problems gotten genetically from their mixed parentage?"

Many thanks for looking at this question and hopefully for voting on this topic.

I personally believe PeTa have gone too far and need to be stopped.

Please forward the link to as many dog people as possible to protect purebred dogs and our rights to watch broadcast conformation shows like Crufts and Westminster.

  • What do you think of the Dog Creation poem?

I have had this on my fridge for years & though I am not overly religious it always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling..

I am curious as to what other think about it.

    CREATION VERSE

When God had made the earth and sky,

    The flowers and the trees,

He then made all the animals

And all the birds and bees,

And when his work was finished

Not one was quite the same..

He said:”I’ll walk this earth of mine

And give each one a name.”

And so He travelled land and sea

    And everywhere He went

    A little creature followed Him

    Until it’s strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth

And in the sky and sea,

The little creature said,” Dear Lord

There’s not one left for me.”

The Father smiled and softly said

“I’ve left you to the end.

I’ve turned my own name back to front

And called you DOG, my friend.”

  • Have you considered feeding you dog a Healthy Natural Diet like BARF?

The most important thing you can do is to feed you dog well from the earliest age possible.. Forget any processed foods and try feeding a natural food diet like BARF. If you want a healthier long lived pet then you can never start too early! Remember that most processed dog food canned or dry is rubbish (bordering on poison!)

My dogs diet is as follows:

(ALL HUMAN GRADE FOOD - NOT PET GRADE!)

    chicken frames minced

    beef mince

    minced lamb liver/ beef hearts/ kidneys/tongue

some soaked 'vets all natural complete mix' supplement to mix with the meats.

    http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/Completemix.html

I weigh it into a serving per bag it and freeze them individually

    - then it is as convenient as a can of food only healthy.

For Breakfast I also give the dogs:

    lamb briskit bones

    chicken frames / carcasses

    fresh/frozen sardines

    fruit & veg - oranges / apples/ carrots/ zucchini/ berries/ blueberry/raspberry/strawberry)

    Make breakfast bones/chicken frames and

for dinner the special mix from the freezer

Before I feed them I also mix in some:

    Pet Pep Up probiotic supplement

    GreenPet Complete supplement

    Omega 3 blend of Oils

(I defrost a couple of bags in the bottom of the fridge and replace them as they are used - that way you always have fresh food ready to go!)

Feeding you dog this diet will save you money on vet bills and keep your pup healthy for the longest time possible. Bonus you also have a dog that has fresh breath / good teeth / less f*rting :)

I know others will say that pet food is fine - but keep in mind most pet food is made by the same companies that make dog pharmiceuticals and it is in their best interest for you dog NOT to be healthy! That way they can sell you the drugs to make it better.. It is up to you!

    For more info http://www.barfworld.com/main.shtml

I am interested in others ideas on this kind of feeding regime and hoping to inspire others into feeding their dogs better.
