Stair Tread Thickness?

I'm building stairs for the interior of my house. 7 5/8 Rise - 10 Run. The stairs will be carpeted. Before I calculate the stringers, I need to know the tread thickness. Can 3/4" plywood be used? Or 1x12 (3/4" thick). Or does it need to be thicker?

Thanks in advanced.

No, you can't use 3/4" plywood or 1x12. Code requires a minimum thickness of 1" (FULL inch) for stair treads. Most people use tread stock or 2x12 for the treads. Hope this helps.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/au0jQ

See if you can buy half round the same thickness as the treads. You can nail this on the end that sticks out. Then with a rasp round the corner. This can also cover where the balustrades come down from the hand rail.

Woodtick is right. Code calls for 5/4 (1" thick) or 2 x (1 1/2" thick). You will be replacing anything else...by the code official or because it broke apart.

That's plenty thick for a standard stair. 20mm thick will span 450mm.

If you want a really solid stair then brace it up too or line under with chipboard.

3/4 should do the trick on a standard 36 or 42 inch wide staircase with a double stringer.

Don't forget the tread nosing with radius.
