'Turning Japanese' by The Vapours- is it really a song about masturbation?

My partner- an adolescent in the 80's, believes this song was about masturbation. Is this true, or just another sad, wet dream?

    In a VH1 True Spin special the band denied this. Fenton explained: "Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to"

    But he was probably lying...
