Is it safe to open the files that "help describe the problem" when Windows recovers from unexpected shutdown?

I've just gotten a new laptop (Toshiba) last Monday after my hard drive failed on my Dell for the second time - which I plan to replace at a later time. Anyhow, I was transferring a couple videos from my external hard drive to my laptop hard drive when I got a blue screen. I've already scanned my entire E-HD for viruses/spyware with Norton. Coincidentally, I was moving a couple workout videos, which happened to be open for a couple hours when my last laptop failed. Of course that frightened me considering what happened to my Dell. Are these files simply stating what went wrong, or are they the corrupt data?

    I have seen this before.

The files are (as you suggest) simply error logs and whatnot that help Microsoft to understand what the problem was exactly.

I've never seen files that needed to be opened to "help describe the problem". I wouldn't touch them.
