Why isn't this the right time for health reform?

I keep hearing that we need some kind of reform but that it isn't the right time because we are in a recession. Don't they realize that the health care crisis is one of the contributing negatives in this economy.

1. Many foreclosures and the majority of bankruptcies are the result of medical bills.

2. People who have lost jobs cannot afford to pay the high cost of COBRA and thousands lose coverage each day.

3. Covering more people will lead to more jobs in the health care industry.

Update:

I love that none of the anti-reform people never directly addressed my question.

Because Big Business owns the US Goverment lock, stock, and barrel, and the insurance companies don't want to lose all that big fat money.

Look at Canada - care is rationed. If I need an MRI - I can get one in a week. With socialized care - the wait is many weeks to months on average.

You have a board of government appointed officials deciding what care you should or shouldn't receive on the basis of cost versus your age/overall health and probability of contunuing to be a productive member of society. It has to be worth their while...

Where should the fate of your health care rest? In your doctor's hands - or some government board? Or your family? How well does the government do with anything else they "manage"?

And since when is the government in the business of making a profit? How is that considered smart economic strategy?

Hospitals can and do work with people on payment plans - it happens every day. But it is the responsibility of the patient/copnsumer to pursue those avenues of compromise...No one will offer it on a silver platter.

And more health care jobs? If care is managed - and government tells doctors how much they will be paid - do you think as many people will want to be doctors? Guess again. Government decides how much is paid per procedure - not the doctors. It would be more likely to cause a shortage of care. Or else the good ones will leave...

The main contributing factor is government interference with the free market but god forbid politicians just sit back and let the free market take care of this. If you think the health care is free market think again it is so heavily government influenced it is almost natural for it to become nationalized.

My main problem with Socialized medicine is that it will not be doled out fairly. My experience has been that government workers and their lefty friends go to the front of the line, while those of us who don't share your love of Fidel get the shaft. we don't trust government workers, and we don't trust you.
