Scenery with water eh? Welllll, Denver doesn't really have a ton of water nearby besides the reservoirs and those are hardly scenic. I think your best bet would be to drive up by Golden and go up Clear Canyon on Hwy 6. That route goes along Clear Creek which is a nice run for rafters and kayakers.
The Platte River runs through downtown Denver and I have seen people playing in the water but I wouldn't. Too dirty.
The Cherry Creek also runs across Denver's south side but it isnt very deep or wide so I doubt you'd get much out of it.
If you're looking for a big lake for some recreation you might want to drive up to the Silverthorne/Dillon area. There is a HUGE lake there where you can rent all sorts of water-related stuff.
Finally, if you indeed want "water" then also check out the Aquarium downtown and of course Water World in Westminster - one of the top 10 water parks in the country according to Travel.com.
Have fun!

There are some beautiful hikes and other activities along streams, lakes and rivers not too far from Denver. These are the ones that come to mind that I especially like.
There are several Colorado State Parks near Denver:
Barr Lake - hiking and birding
Chatfield Dam - boating and many other activities
Cherry Creek Dam - same as Chatfield
Castlewood Canyon - stunning hike
Mount Evans Road includes Echo Lake plus a spectacular drive to the top
Some other hikes and rafting venues
Waterton Canyon - great for hiking and biking
Clear Creek along I-70 has rafting and a hiking and biking trail
Beaverbrook Watershed - little jewel of a park with a man-made lake on Squaw Pass Road
While you are in Clear Creek County, stop off at the Indian Hot Springs in Idaho Springs where you can certainly get into the hot springs pools.

There is very little water around Denver. Water is not exactly a specialty in Colorado! There is the Platte river that flows through Denver and you can go kayaking on it. See 1st site below for sites with info on this. There are plenty of hot springs in Colorado...see below. Rocky Mountain National Park is just over an hour north of Denver and has fantastic scenery. Stop at the visitors center for info on many great hikes, where to see wildlife, and activities in the park. Drive up to the continental divide on top of Trail Ridge Road...fantastic views.
