Do you punch like a Girl?

I taught a seminar this weekend. A good friend came from Virginia. Lats nigh we were talking about Makiwara training. He showed me this video, saying my punches reminded him of this video. He told me of one of his senior students that is very big and strong. The student's biggest obstacle is learning to relax. My friend always tells him that he should learn to punch like a Girl. Take a look at this video. This Okinawan karate-ka is 28 years old and only 125 pounds. But boy can she punch. This is how I teach my students to punch too. What do you think about her punches. Do you also want to learn the punch like a Girl? I do!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKwO5-ji1rQ

Update:

Everlast .... Did you even look at the video, or did you just assume that you did not want to punch like this girl? If you did not look at the video, I suggest you do.

Update 2:

Wow. I can't believe some of the answers. Some of you totally missed the point. The video is not supposed to show you how you would just stand there and prepare before punching. It is only training to teach you how to punch correctly. I'm sure that she would not stand in a set stance and then take a few practice punches to measure distance. Don;t get lost in the training. All I'm asking is what do you think of the punch..... Power, speed, ....

Dan you are welcome to your opinion but really.... I wanted you to look at how well she punches. Instead you are more interested in trying to find fault with her stance. Fro what it is worth this young woman has trained since she was 6 years old. Her instructor is very respected in Okinawa and very high in rank. I would not even begin to attempt to tell her of her Sensei that there is something wrong with here form. Besides if she hits you with that punch you won;t be worrying about how she was standing when she decked you.

Update 3:

For those wondering, The makiwara used in the video is a really good one. It is stiffer than it appears. Yet it is not to stiff. i see many people training with a Maki that is to stiff. That just increases the chances of injury. Took me many years of trail and error to design and build one as it should be. This kind of training is exactly why I do not use a heavy bag. It teaches you to punch properly without pushing the target.

Update 4:

Wow, Thanks everyone for the answers. Sensei Scandal, Thank you for the link to Michiko Onaga's kata video. Peopl tell me that my Naihanchi Shodan is good. I'd rate mine at a 3 on a scale of 10 compared to Michiko's kata.

Thank you all for the kind comments about my knowledge and ability. It is you who keep me from just leaving Y/A. I am very humbled by your support. As for the post by Shane, I just woke up. His post is not here. I did not get to see it. I wonder if he deleted it, or Y/A removed it? Shane if you read this you are welcome to contact me by email at pugpaws2@yahoo.com.

Update 5:

Just so you all know Stilcrazyafteralltheseyears is a friend of mine. He is a highly ranked student of Both Shorinryu and an old lesser know style which I can't seem to remember the name of. He came for my seminar driving 10 hours each way. He had to get two doctors permission to even make the trip, but he came. It was y pleasure to have him stay in my home. He showed me the video of Michiko. So the credit of it being posted here should really go to him. Stillcrazy does not post often on Y/A but I know him to be as knowledgeable as anyone I know on Okinawan karate. The regular guys here would all appreciate him, as I do. Shihan J, Sensei Scandal, ....etc. you should contact him. You will like him and his incite into traditional arts.

Update 6:

Dan, I do appreciate your input even if I do not agree with you. That was the point of asking the question. I will say this, it seems that most everyone is impressed with the punch and Michiko's abilities. I know from being hit by such a punch many times that she will not lose her balance. You are welcome to disagree. I just call then as I see them. I'm sure you do too.

Update 7:

Sure wish I'd gotten to see the answer Shane posted before it was removed.

Stillcrazy is being humble. He says that he wishes that he punched like me. His punch is excellent. I wish my kata was as sharp as his.

I have been a long time fan of Shinjinbukan - of which she is the Chief Instructor, under her Father, and of Kyudokan, from which it is a derivative.

I knew who you were talking about right away.

They utilize the "Koshi" or hips in every movement.

Her body is lead by her Tanden (Dantien). This is why she can generate the power and speed she has.

There is video of her doing Naifanchin that makes you wonder what on earth is everyone else doing! --->

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCpkV-zSP-0

To all of you who don't know - and that is alot - this is what REAL Okinawan Karate is... or rather REAL KARATE.

Excellent point to bring up and video post.

Shane - if you cannot tell by the content of the person's knowledge-base, whether or not he/she is highly skilled, it means you are too "young in the arts" or not a practitioner at all.

You possess that "new mentality" that is destroying martial arts.

Haven't your parents taught you that RESPECT is unconditional? Something you give automatically - assuming all people are worthy of it?

Has Master Pugpaws ever given shady or suspect information? Well - if you have no knowledge of something, you cannot discern whether or not you're being schooled or being lead to the slaughter.

As a person who has more training and experience than you have years on this earth, I can tell you that HE is the real deal - and you're not!

    :) Trust me.

Dan - your post made me laugh but it is really sad that you think what she is doing is flawed.

Her Father was top student of Yuchoku Higa - relative of Chojun Miyagi. One of Higa Sensei's Teachers was Jinan Shinzato - Miyagi's Top Student and only person to learn "ti" from Miyagi.

"ti" is Okinawa's original art before Chinese concepts and theories were integrated.

What she is doing is "ti". If you watch and LISTEN, you will hear her Father saying it on the video.

Believe me - she will not be off-balanced.

She is not some competitor. She is going to be appointed Head of a lineage that has real pedigree and history, which she has been practicing all her life.

    This is not "tiger schulman's".

    Edit:

I'm really glad this answer hasn't "disappeared". I have had many answers just vanish without a trace and I have gotten many weird emails. Has anyone else experienced this?

Stillcrazy - it is my pleasure to make sure that attacks on people of real integrity don't go unchallenged. Than you for your comment.

There are many here who know nothing.

Also there are those who have read the answers and exercise judgment and wisdom to help them "see" who knows and who is real. I applaud all those young practitioners.

Shane's answer was just pure ignorance and like all ignorance - deserves a thrashing. Too bad his answer was removed and I am 100% sure it was done so by him. He realized that he wasn't talking about someone on his own level... oh well!

There have been many "shanes" before him and there will be many after! They are just more opportunities for me and others, to do some thrashing.

    :)

Sorry I missed the seminar but I am in Cocoa Beach this weekend teaching Kumite sessions and attending a dan ranking event for one of the groups I train with.

I enjoyed the video and it was great to see the focus, application of physics and proper use of the hips with the makiwara training this young lady was doing. I showed this video to a few of my buds down here who study Shorin Ryu and they loved it.

While here I attended a Shorin Ryu dojo training session with a good friend who is one of Master Keopple's black belts. We did some makiwara training and it was great. I sure miss not having one in my dojo (dry walls and rented space so can't drill the floor)...but I do have three in my back yard. My students dread the back yard dojo classes when we have them because we do many of the old training methods.

Perhaps I will make the next seminar...at least I sincerely hope to but since I am a poor Karate Sensei I have to go where the money is sometimes and if I am being paid to teach a seminar, or at least offered to do one, I am there. Thanks for the video!

An excellent example of how to keep the upper shoulder and those slow twitch, power type muscles out of the punching action and instead use the fast twitch muscles together with the hips. The young lady has obviously spent much time practicing and developing her technique to a high level and her accuracy is quite good as a result of that as well. There are no short cuts and this is what practicing the proper technique will do for you over a period of time. Also the rising side kick up under the arm along with the regular side kick shows that she has some skill in kicking as well.

I don't understand some of the answers here. If that's unless they barely read the question and didn't see the video either. Is punching like this girl really the best way to go for anybody of any height and weight? Or should I try throwing powerful but technical punches like Mike Tyson or throw speedy and technical punches like Muhammad Ali and Manny Pacquiao? To me, manly or girly, I'll use whatever works for me best. From my perspective, that punch that girl threw didn't really look girly though. Also, there's no fault in her punch or stance. For example, while the coach is demonstrating a jab or some combos, saying that there's a fault and that he should duck, sway, or block right away is just ridiculous. That already indicates how much knowledge he/she has.

Not in the face..but yeah I have punched a girl before, many girls in fact but I'm scared if I punched them in the face and then go even further so I try my best not to get in silly fights like that.

  • It would be a great honor for me to punch like this young lady. She happens to be extremely accomplished. I don't punch like a girl yet but I hope to some day.

Shane - what is your experience that makes you superior to everyone on Y/A?

Thank You for the Excellent commentary Sensei Scandal. I wish I was half has good as Pugpaws!

I don't claim to know anything special but I am sure I can tell excellent accomplishments when I see them. Onaga Sensei is the real deal and Pugpaws is also!

Are you kidding? If that's an example of how to " hit like a girl." Then I'm going to start shaving my legs too. She demonstrated both speed, and power. As you already know. These are essential in combat. The fact that she was taking time between punches is beside the point. In the dojo is where we can take advantage of that luxury. I'm certain this young lady would prove more than adequate in a street situation.

Almost the perfect punch. Focus, speed with power and relaxation, Tai Sabaki usage, total body involvment, and total commitment to the one technique..all the traits of a good Okinawan punch...color me impressed, since that is an awsme punch for anyone, male or female. I should hope to one day punch like that.

I LMAO at all of the "You wouldn't punch like that on the street answers or wouldn't have time to set up". These people are obviously clueless. Excellent video and thank you for sharing.

Looks like excellent use of the techniques I've been taugh, tight fist, arm rotation, core rotation, good twitch, straight solid wrist, hit with first 2 knuckles, speed, focus, balance...

I may be a girl, but I moved some of my instructors teeth one day using these techs when he happened to look away for a second when we were doing drills!

  • 1 decade ago

I watched the video and I saw another video of her. She is doing what we attempt to teach our student to do when punching. Her power comes from the rotation of the hips. It is very direct.

My instructor has never said punch like a girl, but uses similar terminology. He over-emphasizes using your hips. Some would say that looks gay. He would tell us the gayer you look the more they hurt.
