Any suggestions on my 4 yr old.....?

Both my ex husband and I struggle with our weight, and I am sure my 4 year old will too. I don't want to deprive her of things, but I also don't want her to struggle like I have. For instance, last night she had a turkey burger with cheese, some salad, and corn on the cob and was still asking for more. I gave her a glass of milk and told her that was enough dinner. However, when I put her to bed I laid next to her until she fell asleep and could feel her tummy growling. I felt horrible. What can I do??

If she wants more food, offer her vegetables or fruit. If she is truly hungry, she will eat those. Other healthy things to offer: natural smoothies (fresh fruit, ice and low fat yogurt, the no fat is loaded with sugar) cottage cheese and fruit, rice cakes with peanut butter. As long as she is eating healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You need to offer food when asked because of growth spurts and such, they truly are more hungry! I agree though about going to her DR and just asking, seems simple enough.

PS: Don't assume just because you and your husband struggle with weight your child will too. My wife's mom and dad were/are overweight (her mom weighed almost 300 pounds, but is now 160 pounds!) And my wife takes after her grandma and is as skinny as can be, she is now only 105 pounds after 2 kids that are 15 months apart. So your child just might get lucky and get a recessive gene or just got hit with the lucky stick!!

Why don't you go to her pediatrician and ask how many calories she needs and a suggested diet? It would make you feel better knowing you are feeding healthy food, and so what if she asks for thirds of broccoli or carrots! My daughter can't get enough Cheet-os.
