I have been putting a lot of perennials in our yard this month. It really depends on whether you are planting in shade, full sun or partial sun and the region you reside in.
I wandered around the local nursery 'just looking' last week and ended up bringing thirteen various plants home with me for a shady area.
The tags on the plants at the nursery I went to had symbols and wording explaining what kind of environment to plant them in.

Varigated Dogwood with red branches. Get garden designed from better homes and gardens magazine. We use them to design our shade areas. Lots of good ideas. Check the Feb March issues each year. Sort of late in the season now.
