Went to the doctor for a sugar test and was told my sugars a little high. Should I be worried?

Im 27 weeks pregnant. I went to the doctor for a sugar test yesterday and my doctor just called me and told me that its a little high. Im not sure if I should be worried or not. Can anyone tell me what this means? Does this mean i have diabetes? I'm scared because this is my first pregnancy. She told me to come in on friday for another sugar test and that I'll be there for three hours, Does anyone know if this sugar test will be different from the one I had yesterday and if yes, how so? I'm very worried, please help me.

My first blood sugar test went like this, I went to the lab and drank a really sweet syrupy mixture, waited an hour and had my blood drawn. I got a call from the doc a few days later and was told that I needed to go back for a second test, and it was just the same but x5, meaning a drank the stuff waited an hour and had blood drawn five times. I did have gestational diabetes. And although there are substantial risks to both you and your baby, they really only apply for the most part if you are irresponsible about it and don't care to take all the steps necessary to take care of the problem.

It really does suck, but it's worth all the trouble to have a healthy baby!

What it boiled down to for me went like this.

I had to see a specialist during the last few months just like the doc, starting at once a month, then twice a month, then every weeks towards the end. I had to cut out all sugars, even most carbs, as they turn into sugar. I ended up being hungry quite a bit, which is really really unfair to pregnant women! I had to prick my fingers and test my blood on a glucometer about 4 times a day, and take a medicine called metformin one a day, to help control the sugars.

But it was all worth it knowing that I could do something to ensure the health of my baby.

The fun part about it all was that every time I went to the specialist I got put on a monitor so I could hear the baby for an hour, and always had an ultrasound also. You have to be much more closely monitored than a regular pregnancy.

Sorry this turned into a mini-novel, but it is overwhelming.

Even if you do end up with gestational diabetes, it will be okay!

Just do your research and take care of yourself and your baby!
