Well from wherever you are in the East Bay, just take any BART train that heads towards San Francisco and get off at Embarcadero Station. After that you go to the corner of Main St. and Market St. and take the MUNI bus number 30x (it's called the Marina Express). Take that bus until you get to the stop at the corner of Chestnut St. and Laguna St. Then at that corner, you take the #28 MUNI bus and that takes you all the way to Golden Gate Bridge. The whole trip from the East Bay should take you about 75-90 minutes.

Golden Gate Bridge is not really walkable to Golden Gate Park. It would take over an hour, unless you're up for a nice stroll in the city. My advice is to take the #29 MUNI bus that makes various stops along Golden Gate Park. You can hop on the 29 right at the beginning of Golden Gate Bridge. If you're at Golden Gate Bridge, you should check out Fort Point as well. Good luck on your trip.

It really depends upon where in the east bay you are starting from? If you are near Richmond or El Cerrito for example Golden Gate Transit route #40/42 has express bus service to San Rafel where you could then take a GGT bus #80 to the Bridge thereby avoiding the congestion of going thru the city of SF. Also, Golden Gate Bridge is not near Golden Gate Park, but MUNI bus #28 serves them both. Good Luck!

If you prefer to have only one transfer, take BART to Balboa Park station. Then transfer to the 29 bus for the "Presidio National Park."

Alternatively, you can also take BART to Daly City station and use the 28 bus for the "Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza." This is the more direct route. But it'll cost a little more in terms of the BART fare.

The land on both sides of the Golden Gate Bridge is owned by the federal government. They're administered by an agency called the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Administration. Leave it to Congress to come up with an incomprehensible, bureaucratic, and unusually long name for what's essentially a ranger unit. This is why so many tourists confuse these federal wilderness areas with the artificially created Golden Gate Park (which is under the jurisdiction of the city).

To get to Golden Gate Park, take BART to any of the Downtown San Francisco stations - Embarcadero, Montgomery Street, Powell Street, or Civic Center - and then transfer to the N-Judah light rail line for "Ocean Beach." The light rail shares the same stations with BART, so you do not need to exit the subway station. Just find the appropriate platform.

Although the N line runs parallel to the park (and you can theorethically get off anywhere once you get pass UCSF Medical), the 9th Avenue and Irving stop is the most easily accessible entrance.

Pier 39 and Fishermans wharf are tourist traps. Alcatraz could be exciting in case you like prisons. Take the ferry to Marin County. be careful as a pedestrian as site visitors is frightening downtown. bypass to Grace Cathedral atop Nob Hill the place there's a eye-catching labyrinth and exquisite perspectives. The Ferry construction on Embarcadero is relaxing for farmers industry and a competent walking area. bypass to the Palace of legion of Honor which has an excellent view of GG Bridge. sidestep the Tenderloin, Bayview and 6th st area. I dont know of any affordable risk-free places to stay . this is an high priced place. that's chilly in summer season and heat in wintry climate yet in certainty unpredictable climate aside from some 3 day warmth waves in July and August. be careful and dont tell human beings you're traveling on my own.
