Why do only some CDs play in my computer?

Seriously. Some play just fine (burned or purchased) and yet others don't read in my computer at all. Is it my computer or the cd's?

For example, I'm trying to rip the MGMT CD but my computer won't read it. It also doesn't read some more independent releases.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop if that helps any.

    Do some of them have copy protection on them? Google search for Clone cd or Clone dvd, whichever one you need.
