Why are guys afraid to train their legs?

Look at the questions about workouts here. Always something about biceps or chest, and all the "how is my routine" questioning shows routines that do not include legs. Why don't you train your legs? Do you all think that having scrawny legs that even a chicken would be ashamed to have is a good look?

The main reason is that they think it's not important. People start bodybuilding for too many reasons to list, but the majority just want a good body so they can feel better about themselves and hopefully impress other people.

Strong guys are always stereotyped with huge arms, combine that with the fact that girls tend to mention how much they love 'abs and biceps' a lot and you can see why you have such a large number of uneducated lifters that only train their biceps and abs. They don't see the importance of training your legs because they think that nobodies going to see or care about them, and because of the natural thickness of your legs they think it looks good enough not to worry about.

If only people understood the benefits of working your legs. Squatting is possibly the best resistance exercise invented. When people learn that working the largest muscle group in your body results in MUCH better all-round growth they tend to get into it more.

You also have lazy lifters, working your legs is the most painful workout, and walking up stairs after an intense session is quite unenjoyable :P They just don't bother because it's too much for them.

Oh and the poster that mentioned the SNL skit, I remember that hahah. A great steroid-free discussion.

    ;D

  • lol, I hate training legs but I have decided to include them in my workouts because I'm starting to look disproportionate. It's funnyy cause I've asked questions on here asking which bodypart you like to train at the gym, and not suprisingly most men said chest or biceps, whilst most women said legs. There is a lot of logic behind it though, these are the bodyparts that are most noticeable to the opposite sex, a woman with toned legs is very attractive to the male eye, while a man with big arms or a broad chest is very attractive to the female eye. So it's not so much that guys are afraid to train legs its just that the results of training them are not as attractive to the opposite sex as training chest or biceps, hence men derive less satisfaction from training them

    Great question!

That is a good stereotype! I train my legs b/c I dont want chicken legs haha. But it does seem like some guys at the gym just stand in front of the mirror the whole time and just do curls!

PS: Did you ever see the skit on SNL back in the day called "How much ya bench"? It was Farley, Sandler and a few others, and they had on huge muscle suits, and it had fake skinny legs attached to them! Basically acknowledging the stereotype.

I think people just want the most noticeable results right away. And by training your legs, it may almost seem like a waste of time for something less noticeable. It's all about the image.
