What does the current fragmentation of the Republican Party mean for the future of partisan politics?
It seems evident that the Republican Party is continuing to fragment, particularly between the far Right and the moderate Republican majority. I think many Republicans are becoming more uncomfortable with the rhetoric coming from the far Right, particularly involving social issues. The Democratic party has similar issues, particularly in regards to social issues.
What does this mean for the future of partisan politics in America?
Personally, I see a potential rift in the Republican Party if they cannot come together. You have your Sarah Palin supporters and the minority on the far Right who disfavors Obama not only because of his policies but because of the color of his skin, and some who seem to be very worried about the progress of making our government more reflective of the diversity of our country. Then you have the Republican party who disagrees with Obama policies, but are not racist and are more concerned with fiscal issues and core social issues (such as abortion and gun rights), but are not willing to join this parade of slander and scare tactics.
What does this mean for the Libertarian party, or the Independents? Could they gain some fellowship from Americans unhappy with their parties (Republican and Democrat)? And what about the very large, rapidly integrating Latino voter base, that is very much up for grabs to either party? With alienation from the far Right, loss of Latino voters could be debilitating to the Republican Party. I understand the conservative weariness of rapid progress, but beyond politics our country is progressing socially and they need to consider that.
What are your opinions. Please, no immature insults, I know many of you have opinions on this.
mikea: you seem a bit misinformed. Non-citizens have no opportunity to vote in this country. In reference to Latinos, I am also looking toward the future, as 2/3 of Latinos in this country are native born, and they will be 25% of our citizenry by 2050.

The Republican party grew out of the splinters of the whigs and the anti-feds, so it's not like it's anything new.
If the Republican party has any hope of surviving, it needs to throw off this Evangelist rhetoric pronto. It's alienating the party from the country, and the rest of the Republican policies are going down with it. If I were an optimist, I'd say that Ron Paul could move in for the kill and reshape the party with a more functional, libertarian base--one that more strongly represents the Republican ideals Jefferson had in mind.
As for the latino demographic, I hate to stereotype, but it's only going to be the shrinking pools of traditional conservatives that are going to be tagging along with the right. The rest are likely to move democrat. Especially if Obama doesn't do anything about the freaking border.

Well, if you look at history what you are witnessing is nothing new. This is all a part of what happens when a majority party becomes a minority party. After some time the Repubs will rebuild and try again. The democrats are also dividing too which is quite intresting considering they are the majority party. However again history shows that Democrats are not the best at being in lock step like Republicans are.
I would love for there to be a third party to vote for, sadly the odds of this happening are null at this point because, the democrats and republicans would never let a new party into the two party system that is overrun by lobbying and legal bribery. If you notice in every election the independent candidate gets jumped by both parties. Plus the independent party does not have the financial clout that the other two have.
In closing, The key to all of this is for all of us to realize that the real power lies with the congress and not the president. The president sets the agenda so his party can make things happen. But as you have noticed with the current party in power, just because the president says he wants something does not mean he always gets it. The power is with us, the sooner we realize it by voting out the dead weight and those that don't represent us as they should the faster we will see progress.

This Latino voter base is undoubtedly littered with illegal immigrants voting as well. A by-partisan commission needs to be formed to eradicate this element from our society. It is destructive in many ways.
The first, I already mentioned. I'm sure the democratic party was the beneficiary to these votes, so Pelosi and her gaggle of misfits are the least likely to support this movement.
The huge number of jobs that are being absorbed by illegal immigrants, is criminal, yet these neutered politicians do nothing to remove them from society and thereby opening up job opportunities throughout the country.
Racism is a far less issue amongst whites, Asians, and other demographics than you suggest. Incompetence, untruths, fabricated statistics and numbers, these are the fundamentals that Americans are seeing today. These are the conditions that have reinvigorated the conservatives and the Republican party. These are the conditions that have already started an erosion of the democratic party, down a one way street to nowhere.

Large groups of Latinos coming into this country are devout Catholics, very family ordinated, anti abortion and and consider marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Your are right they are mostly Mexican, They are hard working, most adults hold down two jobs, and want they a part of the American dream like any other immigrate group! High taxes and massive government entitlements put their dreams in grave danger and they know it.
The Mexican government it's self fears the Catholic church influence and has for 100s of years, Priests and religious are not permitted to wear their habits in public.
Don't count the1000s upon 1000s of Mexicans yet in your scenario. At this point even they are fleeing Calf and they realize liberal thinking is responsible for the problems that exist there. As a group as a whole they are going to surprise everybody.

Well as long as the Democrats have a staple they'll be fine. Currently that staple is the Obama administration. Unfortunately for 3rd parties they still will not be strong enough to bring in a new era of political parties because of Television News such as MSNBC or Fox News which both end up promoting the large parties.
In my opinion the only way that there can be reform in the party politics is if there is a major scandal that involves a large portion of a single party. Then at that point we might see the other party form into Moderate and (Depending on the party that it involves) Conservative/Liberal parties.

Nice try. Conservative values predominate in this country. People live within their means, unless they're on welfare or freeloaders, people like freedom from government intervention.
The Republican party is not going away any time soon, and this idea of "far right" being alienated, dream on.
Basically, this sounds like a tactic of the democrats to undermine the growing conservative movement, and the move to kick Obama and his minions into next week when the next election cycle comes around.
Americans, those who pay taxes, create jobs, contribute to our freedom, those people don't want socialism, or anything else being handed out by democrats and the left wing socialists who tend to gravitate to that once-slave owner group.

The right wingnuts are destroying the republican party. The GOP is embarrassed about what they saying about Obama's insurance reform for example. But every day some lunatic will post a comment, not realizing the liberals are eating it up.

It means the Republican Party is becoming a regional party and America is better for it. Southerners have a history of shame and rank near the bottom in every category.

It's one of the best things to ever happen to the Libertarian party.. we have never grown faster.
People are realizing that they have been libertarians all their lives.. they just never knew it, thinking they had to choose between the parties of tweedle dum & tweedle dumber. (I'll let the reader decide which is which)

I believe there will be an increase of 3rd party (probably libertarian)!
