Out of those listed, I would only have A Love Supreme and Sarah Vaughan. Billie is great, but not the album they have listed.

Even better for Coltrane, I would have his Complete Village Vanguard Recordings of 1961 (4 discs). It has Eric Dolphy with Coltrane. Most critics hated it at the time. Called it "anti jazz". That's only because they didn't have nothing to compare it to.

What is so great about the Sarah Vaughan, in addition to her singing, is the band. Clifford Brown is amazing and so is "the vic-prez" Paul Quinichette. After listening to that album, you know what dignity in music is. Not one BS note. Sincere and tasteful.

Sheila Jordan is one of the very few singers to have an album on the original Blue Note Records label. A very scare album, minimal sounds. I haven't heard anything like it. Its a shame she didn't record more. Her more recent stuff is not the same. I would have that album.

I can't even begin to make a desert island list.

Hmmm. I don't think you need Ella with Louis if you already have Ella alone. I'd replace that with a Hot Fives and Hot Sevens compilation. Then again, that doesn't fit in as well. It also seems to me that Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings is the more important Basie album.

The whole thing's very nichey, you know? It's very focused on vocal jazz, so I'm not sure what A Love Supreme's doing there. And if you're going to have two Coltranes, I don't really know why they chose the one with Hartman.

Of course, I've only actually heard four of the albums, (though I've listened to all the artists, some much more extensively than others), so I'm not a great judge.

  • It's funny, "dessert island". How will they satisfy? The compilation looks more like a trophy shelf, they're to look at or maybe listen to in anticipation of ..... I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Basically I would prefer music that would excite me for a little fishing.

Sax. would unravel my nerves. Wouldn't appreciate Sarah or Ella and don't know (double negative) Diana. Just was introduced to Jobim, thank you, he's on the list with Basie. Billie, will be in for a alternate.

    Add:

Casino Royal sound track produced by Bert Bacharach.

Howard Roberts is a Dirty Guitar Player and Equinox Elevator Express by Howard Roberts.

Big Band Plays Big Hits by Si Zentner

Buena Vista Social Club by Ry Cooder

I guess the Howard Roberts thing is just me.

I got another thing with Stephan Grappelli and Django

Well, I will quit before I hit a bad button.
