Yeah, when you're a 1st-term President, you have to worry about media firestorms, because you're campaigning for your second term from the moment you're sworn in.

Obama blew it when he came down hard on the side of his fellow halfrican american without his usual stop-and-think equanimity. Obama's strength has always been his ability to eloquently sidestep any issues upon which a definite stand might be politically risky. Look how well he did defusing the Rev. Wright fiasco, for instance.

This is just one of those things that happens to politicians in today's 24/7 media-microscope environment. You let one little thing slip out uncensored, and they're all over you.

In order to mitigate the damage, he's had to go with this bizare 'beer summit' thing. I guess it was the best he and his handlers could come up with. If he'd just mouthed meaningless plattitudes about the importance of race issues in America, instead of taking sides, he'd've been fine.

I agree with your premise that Gates was a jerk. I'd go a bit more and say he should be fired: he revealed himself to be a repulsive racist.
