How do I remove paint spills from unfinished wood?

We have a new, un-sanded, fence. The wood is rough and unstained.

The house was just painted and the painters did a beautiful job, spilling paint on the fence.

How do I remove it? Can't sand it off as that will be obvious. I assume turpentine or thinner will ruin or stain the unfinished wood and also look obvious.

Paul, I'm not being sarcastic, but I would ask the painters how they are going to remove paint spills from the unfinished wood.

Notwithstanding, you could use paint thinner, or turpentine. When I evaporates it may not show at all.

But I would certainly approach the painters first!

  • Ouch. You would probably need to sand it. If the house was actually painted and not stained then the drips probably didn't penetrate the wood on the fence and a little sanding with do the trick. Nothing else you can really do. You could try and maybe use a paint stripper but that usually damages the wood. Maybe you should just paint the fence at this point.

Don't pay the painters till they've cleaned up completely - including spills like these.

If you've already paid them, call them back (on the pretense of more work?) and ask them to clean it up.

    Good luck.

pressure wash is a good idea, the sooner the better. If the paint doesn't thoroughly dry it's much easier to wash it off.

I would try wiping lightly with mineral spirits.
