As a Sox fan, it makes the AL east even more interestign I think, its a big bat the Sox needed but also leads to a strange situation where you have Lowell, Youk, Varitek, Martinez to play 1B, 3B, and Catcher. Even if you DH one of them that then take Ortiz out of the line up. Plus, you still own Laroche for the time being unless a deal gets done. AL east is going to be very interesting with the Yanks, Rays, and Sox battling the rest of the year, no one is going to run away with the division.

    Red Sox fan:

I think this provides some help for a staggering offense. The Sox haven't played well at all since the break. As hot as the Yankees are I don't see Boston "running away with it"

Boston and NY are looking more and more like the class of the AL.

Long term what does this mean? Does Varitek retire at seasons end? I think that tough decision needs to be made. Tek has batted around 220 for almost 2 full years now, Love the guy but that kind of offensive liability doesn't help.

  • Frankly, this probably just makes it a little more tougher for the Rays. But otherwise, I couldn't care less. The Rangers can spoil their party as the Red Sox and Yankees beat up on each other the rest of the season. And the AL East is no cakewalk as all the teams play each other pretty well. It's not only the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL. The Angels are around too. You people who are so-called fans will get a wake-up call for your arrogance.

I guess there's no point in asking Red Sox fans to have a 'bit' more class than the same approach they condemn Yankee fans for huh?

There are more fans on here than just Red Sox and Yankees and believe it or not, we are mostly sick of the whole "It's us or them"..

How about rephrasing "the Red sox just traded for Victor Martinez, how much did they improve their playoff chances, anyone can answer"

i could pass with Posada by using fact he's a extra effective protective catcher then Martinez and is likewise an exceptionally grab ball participant. Im no longer asserting Martinez isnt grab b/c he's and has an exceedingly super bat yet i think of Posada brings extra to a collection.

will the yanks run away with it now cuz they got hairston jr, no. and neither will the sox, victor is a solid player but it aint gonna change that much

They needed a bat but they are going to miss Masterson in the bullpen. He was their most reliable arm in the pen.

They also traded LaRoche to the Braves for Casey Kotchman. I hope this is just a deal to package together for another player because Casey Kotchman is a downgrade from LaRoche in my opinion, especially on the Red Sox. Theres no need for this trade.

They haven't signed him yet...and it won't work as well as planned because Martinez is a catcher and the Sox already have a catcher in the form of team captain Varitek. While Varitek is struggling, the team will struggle more if Varitek isn't in the lineup.

The Sox struggle mightily without Varitek...he is an invalueable piece to this organization.

Great for them i heard they were after him,but i still don't think the Red Sox are gonna run away with anything i belive my yankees are going to win their division and the Red Sox will get the WC end of story.

The end of year third place finish that the Red Sox are inevitably linked to will not be affected by this acquisition.
