    You are trying to find a percentage of your total sales. Thus:

    $4321.82 = 100%

    So you are trying to find what 283.62 is in percentage so, you need to find the percentage or fraction that 283.62 is of 4321.82

    Thus 4321.82/283.62 = 15.24

    So that means that 283.62 is 1/15.24 of 4321.82

    Next you must turn 1/15.24 into a percentage

    so to find percentage you divide

    100/15.24 = 6.56

    thus 283.62 is 6.56% of 4321.82

    Your total sale equals 100 %

    One departments sale equals x%

    x = (100%/ total sale) * department sale = (100%/ $4321.82 )*$283.62

    x = 6.59%
