There are actually close to 20 sects of Buddhism. In India, Buddhism was absorbed by Hinduism but I think you mean Buddhism in its most basic, first form which is now called Theravada. Buddhism was the first missionary religion, and missionaries were sent out throughout Asia and beyond. As they traveled, and taught the lessons of the Buddha, these ideas co-mingled with the existing culture and religion of the particular area, as in Tibetan Buddhism, or the ideas were taken and built upon, like Pure Land or Nichiren.
I can't possibly list all the differences in all the types of Buddhism here, but I can give you a link that is very thorough in its information about all the different kinds of Buddhism. Just a quick note first; Buddhism is basically divided into two schools, Theravada and Mahayana. You can loosely compare these to Catholicism and Protestantism in that Mahayana has many sects of Buddhism like Protestantism has many sects of Christianity: http://www.buddhanet.net/

Chinese Buddhism is more beautiful and attractive than traditional Indian Buddhism because it is a hybrid of Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism or Confucianism.
Bodhidharma an Indian monk who went to China to spread Buddhism there established a new tradition of masters that later on came to be known as Zen Masters. Zen is the most beautiful way for intellectuals and even Atheists can follow it wholeheartedly.
Even today Zen is famously known as the living truth.
Whereas Indian Buddhism remained traditional and was almost absorbed by HInduism in due course of time.

There are so many traditions of Buddhism, any answer wouold be simplistic, but here's a few things.
Because of the digital nature of Indo-European languages, Indian Buddhism developed an extensive logic tradition, and culminated it's development in Madhyamaka and Yogacara Buddhism. All of the Indian traditions exist in China, but they took on a distinctly Chinese flavor by adopting words from Taoism and Confucianism, and because China has no developed logic tradition, due to it's more analog linguistic history. Chinese Buddhism became much more artistic and immediate than the Indian traditions.
