Anime similar in nature to Cowboy Bebop?
I saw the series originally a little more than a year ago, and I recently re-watched it all this summer. But no anime I have seen since really compares to Bebop. I've watched and liked:
Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Kino's Journey
Serial Experiments Lain
Mushi-shi
I can't stand anything campy, cute, overly emotional or light-hearted whatsoever. Please don't suggest:
Anything centering around the high school lifestyle, harem girls, comedy shows, angst, or everyday life. Nothing about a group of youngsters determined to stick together and defend that in which they believe. These types of shows do not interest me much. I want something with attitude, style, and enough guts to break away from the sterotypical, average anime that comes out all the time. I've seen some or all of, and did not like:
Code Geass
FMA
Trigun
Bleach
Naruto
Wolf's Rain
Gungrave
Eureka Seven
Evangelion
Haibane Renmei
I'm sorry if I'm sounding too picky, but I'm desperately trying to find something as compelling as Cowboy Bebop. Everything in that show is virtually perfect in my opinion, and I often find myself thinking of it when I watch an anime I'm not fond of. I want something with the same uniqueness and polish that Bebop had.
Please don't limit your suggestions to anime involving the elements of Bebop: it's not the space western genre that I fell in love with, it's the finesse that gave the show it's unique touch. I'm open-minded to anything that's good. I was especially fond of Lain, as the style was something that kept me hooked and interested. I enjoyed the first half of Death Note very much; for obvious reasons, I hated the second half of the show. Finally, both Mushi-shi and Kino's Journey were very supernatural and spiritual, something that few other anime try.
I'm not a die hard anime fan either - I'm into anything worthwhile:
Linux, computer programming, philosophy, cannabis, astronomy, and molecular biology. I like anything really worth my time.
Someone please help me find something!

Alright, next on my list to check out would be Ghost in the Shell. The movies and series (Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex) are sheer brilliance and even non-anime fans enjoy them very much due to the gritty way they portray the future and the philosophical musings of the characters who constantly are trying to justify their existence's and humanity. This show made me scratch my head a lot of times and challenged my intelligence and opinions a lot.
Another one that is reeeally atypical is Paranoia Agent. This show is one of the most bizarre things that I have ever seen - but it is very psychologically based and unique in the way the anime's story is presented. I enjoyed it, but those who don't like anime might be turned off by it's distinct japanese flavor.
Last up is Gankutsuou. It's is essentially a remake of The Count of Monte Cristo, but with style to spare. This show has some of the most gorgeous animation and art direction I've ever seen in an anime and has an outstanding story of betrayal with one of the best villains you'll ever see (Light's got nothing on the Count).
Hope this helped, and way to look outside the tripe of mainstream. Good luck1

Maybe Samurai Champloo, I really enjoyed cowboy bebop and agree with what you said so with that I think it would be a good anime for you. It involves 2 very skilled swordsman one rebellious, mugen, the other reserved, Jin, both want to kill each other but don't due to fuu a girl how wins a bet for them to journey with her. That's a very brief summary you can look at pictures first to see if your interested before watching :) involves lots of blood and violence some sexual content and can be comical all in all I say it's a must watch.

*Gasp* No FMA? Sorry lol XD Hm...I dont really know if you'd like these, but I know that theres Elfen Lied,
The Diclonius, a mutated human that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of all of mankind, possess two horns in their heads. In addition, they have vectors, or invisible hands, that can kill their enemy in an instant. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government.
all the 'Higurashi' series,
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a story of many chapters. It's about the town of Hinamizawa, and the people who live there, Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude, as well as friends, relatives, and visitors dealing with Lord Oyashiro's curse. Every year on the night of Watanagashi, people mysteriously disappear and are murdered which is rumored to be a curse, though it has yet to be proven. However, certain people don't believe it, especially with the odd behaviors of some of of the residents of Hinamizawa.
and then theres *you wont like it, but its definetly DIFFERENT* a shojo anime, I My Me Strawberry Eggs....its about a man who wants to become a gym teacher at a school that is strictly female, so he crossdresses.....he meets a girl, chaos ensues.
Oh, and then theres Bobobo-bo bo-bobo. That is some messed up crud.

Well, based on what you said, something somewhat psychological may strike your fancy...
Paranoia Agent is very good, and trippy enough to want you wanting more. Very dark, though it doesn't TRY to be dark...one of my favorites.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni may also peak your interest, and is well received by most audiences.
Paprika, while not being a series, is one of the (no, THE) greatest animated films I've yet to see, by acclaimed and very twisted director Satoshi Kon. It's all about dreams, and is certainly worth seeing. The soundtrack is also incredible.
Also check out...
Ergo Proxy and Dennou Coil (Quirky, though very good none the less).
I hope these ideas are well received, and each of the animes I mentioned have either seen in completion or have watched some of and liked a lot, not finishing them only due to time constraints. Hope you find what you're looking for.

If you want a show with some cool attitude and style, you might like Soul Eater. I loved it right away, cause the animations great, the writing was funny, and the story was a very cool tale IMO. find it on animekuro, com if you want
