ans: What did you think of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Epilogue?

Personally, I hated it. No, hate's to strong a word-- MAJORLY disliked it.

The fact that Harry ended up with Ginny bugs me to no end. Actually, Ginny herself is quite annoying. From someone who's barely mentioned to SuperWoman? Mary Sue, I say.

...and their kid's names! I think Jo might have had serious writer's block at the end.

That Neville and Luna didn't even go out...they were meant to be!

I liked Ron and Hermione's relationship though. That was about the only thing I liked int the epilogue.

What also bugged me was that it ended: "All was well". Really? The whole happily ever after deal? I know that there were a ton of deaths but still! Couldn't there have been a conflict or something thing that would have ended the series better than that?

Going to end the rant now.

What did you think of the DH epilogue?

Update:

You guys are amazing- and most of you agree with me! Yay, now I know that I'm not crazy. ;)

You've had so many fantastic answers already that i'm slightly hesitant to answer this. What I'm going to say is probably exactly what karen already said.

I can't decide whether i liked it or disliked it. Right in the middle i guess. But I'll quickly say, JK Rowling wrote this chapter around the time she was writing the first book. I think you can tell. The writing doesn't quite flow from the last chapter of Deathly Hallows and it has the same younger audience feel that Philosopher's Stone does. In saying that though I think that's a nice way to end the series. Ending it how it started. Nice little parallel.

I never had a problem with Harry and Ginny getting together. Back in the day I was a huge Harry/Ginny shipper. Mainly because i was against Harry/Hermione. But yeah, i loved Harry and Ginny together. I liked Ginny as a character. And after all, the person you end up with doesn't have to be the prominent person in your life all through high school. My boyfriend and I went to the same high school and I had absolutely no idea who he was until senior school. Even if you don't like Harry/Ginny in the books, it doesn't mean that they didn't grow as people in the years proceeding the ending of Deathly Hallows. I didn't think Ginny was a Mary Sue and she didn't appear out of nowhere. I mean she's in every book. I think she's a strong character who suited Harry well.

The name thing creeped me out though. I always pictured Harry naming his first son James. But Lily as well? That's weird. And then Albus Severus? Wtf. Why would you inflict a kid with a name like that, no matter how brave and noble the people who he was named after were. A lot of people were weirded out by Scorpius but it's so typical Malfoy. It suits the whole wizarding world.

Ron/Hermione I've always loved. And i never cared that Neville and Luna got together. That would just be one creepy inbred family then. Neville always struck me as more scared of Luna then anything.

Jk Rowling said, ages ago, back when book four was published, that the last word of the epilogue was scar. I was so excited for my "scar" ending that "all was well" completely let me down. It doesn't really bother that much either though.

I'm sitting in the busiest part of uni typing this. I feel like a noob sitting on yahoo answers outside. There's these people playing hacky sack infront of me. It's weird.

Actually, I believe I read from some article that J.K. wrote the epilogue before she wrote the series. Furthermore, you can really tell the difference in quality between the seven book and its epilogue.

Personally, I really enjoyed Ginny's character in the series. As reader you get to watch as Ginny grows up from that little girl chasing after the Hogwarts Express in the first book, to the brave young lady fighting and standing up for what is right in the seventh. I liked how Ginny accepted the fact that Harry was going off to do what he has to do. The typical reaction for a Mary Sue would probably be a crying and begging girl. Instead, Ginny took over Dumbledore's Army - with the help of Neville and Luna - and fought back.

If my memory is correct, I believe that in the same interview mentioned above, J.K. said that she may make a "Harry Potter encyclopedia." Crossing my fingers that she will so that all lose ends will be tied up.

    Honestly, on a scale of 1-10, it's a solid 5. I couldn't decide if I liked it, or not.

Well, let's get over Ginny. I'm one of the few Harry Potter fans who truly likes Ginny and doesn't think she's a Mary Sue or annoying. I was pretty glad that Gin ended up with Harry, I mean, who else would!? Not Hermione and I couldn't see Luna/Harry happening and I don't want some random chick that we hardly know about end up with The Boy Who Lived (lol, shouldn't it be The *Man* Who Lived, now?) So I'm glad Harry and Ginny are together.

And I love Hermione and Ron in this, especially Ron, then again, he's my favourite character :P

Yeah, I agree with you on the names. Albus Severus!? Goodness, the kid looks just like Harry, and is named after Dumbledore and Snape!! This kid is probably gonna hate himself because of his appearance, or his name, or both!! And really, James Sirius and Lily Luna?! I was like...13 when I read it at first and the first thing that went in my head was, "Harry is so stupid!! Wouldn't he feel upset every time he says Lily and James, especially if he's saying James's full name!?" lol, I still think that... Harry was pretty dumb... Where was Ginny when this all happened!? Thank goodness Hermione and Ron didn't give horrid names, Rose and Hugo are decent :P

I know I'm going to get beat up for typing this, but after reading the series for the second time, I couldn't see Luna and Neville together... I just couldn't. But what made me upset was the Luna and Neville weren't in the epilogue... it would've been nice to see them, I mean, we saw Draco!! I like how he and Harry have some sort of mutual respect for each other. Oh, and, have I said anything about his kid's name: Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy!? (Yeah, Hyperion is his middle name, apparently) What was Jo thinking!! :P

    And for the ending:

"All was well." = "And they all lived happily ever after." for me.

I mean, sure, I wanted a happy ending... but not that happy... It was, for lack of a better word, cheesy. It was just full of cheese. It was a nicely written piece and I liked the humour but... the content could've been well, different and yet, I pretty much liked it :P

*deep breath* There, I'm over my long rant, I probably have one of the longest rants XD

Edit: Man, my rant is horrible!! It's so long and, ugh...

Edit 2: OMG, I had the same idea of having the epilogue at the Burrow, Dobby!! (lol, it's nice to see you) :P

I disliked it because it didn't seem like the end. I feel that it needed just a tad bit more spice to it. Ginny was a Mary Sue, I have to admit I liked her better when she was shy and cute. But I liked the fact Harry looks like James, and Ginny like Lily, so it's kind of like repeating? =)

Other than that, I feel that if Harry should have ended up with anyone else rather than Ginny, it's Luna. When I first read OotP, I really thought that's what was going to happen!

The DH epilogue could have been so much better, I agree. I just felt that something was missing! =/

I'm one of those people that, after finishing a book, likes to imagine for herself what happens to the characters afterwards. I don't want the author to tell me every single detail of the main characters' futures. I would prefer to decide by myself.

That being said, I honestly wouldn't have minded if the epilogue had been of a better quality. Albus Severus and James Sirius, for instance. Those poor children. I realize Harry wanted to name his kids after important people, but really, did all his kids have to suffer? And so thoroughly? There isn't an original name in the bunch.

The whole thing was Rowling's drawn out way of saying, "And they all lived happily ever after." It bugs me how she had to tie everything up in a perfectly neat little bow.

When I heard there was an epilogue, I got excited. I pictured a cute little scene with Harry and his family living comfortably at Godric's Hollow. Instead, Rowling really didn't give us a scene. She flew through the names, letting us know who ended up married to who, and ended with, "The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well." What a let down.

My rant was worse than yours, I think. I would like to make something clear. I still very much love Deathly Hallows. Just not the epilogue.

Ugh, I agree with you, except I liked that Harry named one of his kids after Severus, but I understand that all of it was a little cheesy. Ginny and Harry's relationship always seemed sudden and far-fetched to me. I never really liked it. And Ginny kind of reassembled Lily to me, so I always thought it was weird. Makes sense, but it's just really weird. And the last line of the book! That is really frustrating, but the rest of the book makes up for it. After all that they've been through, life can't just be "well." I kind of wish there wasn't such a heavy closure to the book.

I sort of imagined the epilogue being set in The Burrow. Harry, Ron, Hermione, their kids, family, etc... all gathered around a fire during Christmas break. Mrs. Weasley is still very irritable and in a rush to get dinner set up. We learn a bit about the kids, what Ron and harry are doing at the ministry, blah blah. (I'm feeling lazy or I would make more stuff up.) But nothing too cozy, because after everything Harry, Ron, and Herminie have been through, life can't just be back to normal...right?

I guess JK just wanted an ending where she or anyone else can't continue the series any further. It was the end.

I didn't like it. Ginny annoyed the hell out of me as well. And the 6th movie just made me hate her even more. She went from being unnoticed to wife of the Savior of the Wizarding World. Honestly though there should have not been an epilogue. Neville and Luna would have been a great couple. As for Ron and Hermione they were such an obvious and boring couple.

Absolutely hated it. I really want to rip it out of my book. ;D

First off - the names. UGH. Albus Severus? Poor kid. Lily and James are both too cliche names, and Hugo is just weird. I basically only liked Rose.

I hate Ginny with a passion, too. I agree, she is a textbook Mary-Sue and I hate that she ended up with Harry. (I'm much more of a Harry/Hermione person.)

Neville and Luna would have been nice, I agree, I don't think they were meant-to-be though. I personally enjoy Ron and Luna, hahah.

The whole thing was just... ugh. Unnecessary and not well-done.

    /endrant :)

Personally, I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the fact that Harry ended up with Ginny. I mean, who else could he end up with? I don't like Harry with Hermione, I like her with Ron too. I liked how he named two of his kids after his parents to honor them, but I didn't like how he named him Albus Severus. I thought that one was a bit too far out there. I also never really thought Neville and Luna were meant to be. I also didn't like "All was well". I think she could have done better than that. But other than that I liked it. I think she did a good job with all of the character's personalities in the end.

I personally liked it but I agree with you that Luna and Neville should've been together. I never liked Ginny....

I liked the father-son moment that Harry had with his son Albus though :)
