Can alcohol permanently ruin your vision?

I know that while you're drunk, or in the process of ingesting alcohol, it does all kinds of silly things to your vision.

Buuut, could someone who has been an alcoholic for probably...20, 25 years have permanent vision problems due to alcohol consumption over the years?

Thanks a lot.

I'm not aware if alcohol could "permanently" damage vision, but if the person is alcoholic for such a long period of time then it would be safe to assume that they could suffer from long-term effects on eyesight. However, these effects could be still be rectified and lessened with less alcohol consumption in the future.

"Heavy alcohol consumption damages your vision in the following ways.

    * It affects your liver, which converts beta-carotene into Vitamin A. This vitamin is an essential part of good vision.

    * Alcoholics don’t eat well and become malnourished. They don’t eat balanced diets. And most of the nutrients in the foods they do eat are destroyed by the chemical imbalances in their bodies.

    * Intoxication also creates short-term problems, including night blindness, double vision, and accommodation paralysis (the inability of your eyes to bring both near and far images into focus)."

"Alcohol affects the liver and reduces the level of an antioxidant called glutathione which can help to protect against eye diseases."

Most people believe that once they are diagnosed with some vision problem and start wearing eye glasses or contact lenses to correct them, they will have to do so for life in order to see better. Those who want a permanent solution to improve eyesight typically resort to Lasik or other corrective eye surgeries. But you you can also improve your vision without surgery and can see perfectly well without using eyeglasses or contact lenses. You can check here to know how https://tr.im/d5f13

Eventually with enough alcohol your eyes can go blurry, which can be a direct effect of alcohol or it might be because alcohol can make your blood pressure fall (that affects your eyes if it happens fast); or you might have another problem, like sugar diabetes that alcohol can trigger or make worse, which affects your vision.

not directly and usually not by itself it needs an underline condition, methanol on the other hand, ethanol's(alcohol) evil little brother causes permanent blindness and eventually death if ingested in even small amounts

edit: sorry to dispel a common and wonderful myth but in a 16 year study on chronic alcoholism it was proven that it doesn't destroy the neuron/"brain cell" it destroys dendrites, which are ramifications of the neuron, the good news is the damage is reversible

Depending on when you start drinking and how long you've been drinking. Alcoholism has a lot of physical side effects on your body. Visual impairment is just one of the side effects do to nervous system damage. Especially if you started drinking at young/middle adolescence.
