What happened last night in the Major Leagues for the first time since 1962?

A major accomplishment was made by a Major League pitcher last night (August 3, 2009) which hadn't happened since 1962.

It quite impressive, it's more rare than a no hitter, hitting for the cycle or even a perfect game.

However outside of my local coverage, I have seen little mention of it. Had this occured with a Quote "Major Market" Quote team...perhaps it would have been the lead story.

Best Answer to the person who not only gets the answer correct, but who does a fair job of promoting the player and the team completed this major accomplishement.

Im guessing Neftali Feliz striking out the first 4 batters he faced and retired 6 straight? If so, He was the Rangers #1 pitching prospect and they brought him up a couple days ago. We got him with the Teixiera(sp?) trade and I am glad we got him. Last night he was hitting 101mph! While the Rangers push for a play off spot he could definitely help them! The kid has a bright future. and the Rangers are not a Major market team. Im just not sure if last night was the first since 1962.

I feel that people ask this question because they think it irritates Yankee fans, which it does, but using your logic, all of MLB has disrespected JR, for not retiring the number sooner. It shouldn't have been available for Rivera in 1995. But since it was, he went on his own to honor JR, and selected #42 as his number. It's not his fault that, later, MLB decides they want to honor JR by retiring the number. Mariano was just ahead of the game in his show of respect. Furthermore, ANY discussion of JR that results by Mariano wearing number 42 is what it's all about anyway, remembering Jackie Robinson. It's a shame that people like you and Ballzy have to turn discussions of Jackie Robinson into such a negative subject. You've totally missed the point and should be ashamed of yourselves for turning the legacy of JR into a way to bash a truly great person like Mo Rivera.

Neftali Feliz's debut and his story with the first 4 batters he faced. I'm not surprised he got such a good outing.

    Yes, it was Feliz.

Congratulations to him and to the Rangers for finally getting a good pitcher. Now maybe he will help the Rangers pitching staff.

    Good Job Texas!

Yeah, if it was Neftali Feliz coming up with the Yankees or Red Sox, then the whole world would have been excited. It was probably mentioned once on Sportscenter or something like that.

  • Feliz struck out hte first 4 batters he faced. First time somebody did that to start a career since 1962.

Neftali Feliz struck out the first 4 batters of his major league career vs. the Oakland A's the first since Pete Richer in 1962 (For the Dodgers vs. the Reds) to strike out the first 4 batters faced in his career.

Feliz replaced Rangers starter Dustin Nippert to open the 6th and struck out Adam Kennedy, Kurt Suzuki, Scott Hairston and Jack Cust (all swinging) before Ryan Sweeney ended the streak by grounding out to Kinsler with 1 out in the 7th.

In Richert's game, Richert came in relief of Dodger's starter Stan Williams with 2 outs in the 2nd and LA trailing 4-0. Richert struck out Vida Pinson swinging.

In the 3rd he struck out Frank Robinson, Gordy Coleman, Wally Post, and Johnny Edwards needing the extra K because of a passed ball by Catcher Johnny Roseboro on Coleman's strikeout.

He extended his streak to 6 striking out 3B Tommy Harper to lead off the 4th before pitcher Joey Jay ended the streak grounding out to 1B Ron Fairley. Richter would pitch the 4th and 5th recording one more strikeout (Coleman) before being lifted for PH Duke Snider in the bottom of the 5th. The Dodgers scored 7 that inning to take a 7-4 lead they wouldn't give up winning 11-7.

Was it Nefelti Feliz striking out his first 4 batters he's ever faced?

That sounds about right doesn't it?

Let me guess: The Mets apologized for their lousy play? Because that sure hasn't happened since 1962, no matter how many times it's been warranted!
