Is a smooth-coated GSD a purebred?

Grwoing up I saw smooth coated German Shepherds around - I haven't seen them anymore. Is this a recessive trait or were the GSD's I saw mixed with something else? We always had the normal plush coated GSD's (most imported) when I was growing up.

3 types of coats are generally recognized by GSD enthusiasts. Short, Plush, and Long.

All 3 can be purebred dogs. But, none of those coats are proof of a purebred dog. http://www.kerstoneshepherds.net/colors/coatsaddle... shows all 3 coats and all 3 are purebred GSD's.

We have a gentleman that imports GSDs from Holland and Germany. Most of the working strains are short haired, or smooth coated. Also, they're completely different to Kennel Club GSDs. The one I saw this week was a completely different colour and it had a head like a bear! Gorgeous dog though, plus the working strains don't have such a roach back and weak back end as the show strains.

True to standard GSD have a smoother shorter coat (but it is still thick), ones with longer coats are not true to show standard GSD.

    Coat

Outer coat consisting of straight, hard, close-lying hair as dense as possible; thick undercoat. Hair on head, ears, front of legs, paws and toes short; on back, longer and thicker; in some males forming slight ruff. Hair longer on back of legs as far down as pasterns and stifles and forming fairly thick trousers on hindquarters. No hard and fast rule for length of hair; mole-type coats undesirable.

I'm pretty sure Smooth Coated GSDs are purebred.

it is variety of a badly bred German Shepherd. it ought to probable be a pass. in case you like a healthy, happy domestic dog that *is* a German shepherd, ensure you pass to an excellent breeder who's registered and positively cares approximately breeding healthy, happy German shepherds. GSDs could be bothered by inherited wellness issues alongside with hip dysplasia, so it is significant the two mothers and fathers have been cleared. returned backyard Breeders, like the guy desirous to sell you a pup could purely sell their domestic dogs for a small fee, yet you will pay for it in the long term. practice for all styles of wellness issues. So please purchase from an excellent breeder :) good good fortune!

  • well there are 2 different kinds of german shepherds theres the american kind and the german kind the american is like a knock-off dog. (there both great) the german kind is darker and the amercan is lighter u most likely saw both mixed those are really cool but breeders dont do that often. i wish i could breed my 2 german and american ones but thats just too much

    hope this helped!
