I don't understand why everyone answered this question as if you were asking how to get skin cancer. It's true that contact with ultraviolet rays of any kind CAN lead to skin cancer. But sunbathing is much healthier than fake tanning because tanning beds use a higher concentration of ultraviolet rays. Plus, there are few people who don't at least attempt to get a tan once summer rolls around. Even if you aren't trying to have any contact with the sun, sunburns/suntans are basically inevitable. That being said, I'm not saying you should lay out for twenty hours and that a tan is worth the risk of skin cancer, but I think you already know the risks and therefore, there's little point in a lecture. Personally, I usually try to stay outside for an hour before going inside. I've got a short attention span so boredom wise I can't stand much longer, and tan wise, I don't get a noticeably different tan unless I'm out for at least an hour. I'm sure if you stayed outside for an hour each day for a week you'd definitely see results. As far as other tips go, sometimes I'll go outside for an hour and then come back inside and do other things, and then go back out a little later. This way, I'm over-heated and not bored out of my mind, and I can get in at least an hour and a half total for the day or something like that. As long as you stick to the suntan lotion, I think you've got a good routine down.

Build up on your tan, tan nude for about fifteen minutes then the next week or so then tan for half an hour. But I really suggest wearing good Sun Block...to prevent skin cancer.

Your Doctor wasn't being perverted..he was offering you to sun bathe nude so you can get full exposure of the Vitamin D...it's just faster to get it during sun bathing.

well these things take time I believe... but you dont want to stay in the sun for too long because then you'll just really damage you skin. I think you should tell exactly what the doctor told you and stick by it. remember, they're educated and they know what they are talking about. if you have any further questions, talk to your doctor, not the internet.

Source(s): I had a friend who had serious vitamin d deficiency and she had trouble to get a tan. then she talked to her doctor and now she looks pretty tan.

it depends on the ultra violet factor for that day. It's nonsense to think that nude is ok. Its dangerous.

The only parts that are needed to get enough vitamin D are the face and the bare arms. About 15 mins in summer and about 30 mins in winter.

your doc is a pervert. NO doctor would say that. sorry to tell you that but change doctors. use a tanning bed if you wanna go nude, otherwise use the sun and SUNBLOCK. with SPF 15, go 30 min a day and in a week you will be nice and gold.

Why did your doctor tell you to sun bathe? Thats terrible advice.

He should have prescribed you vitamin d supplements to take daily. You wont get enough D from the sun to make any difference.

Any pharmacy or even walmart will have some.

Get a new doctor he doesnt know what hes talking about..

I'm in my middle 50s, and I can do 25 minutes or so before I turn into a Dorito.

    are you wearing any sunscreen?

I'd say keep doing it for 15 mins but increase how often you go out.

So start going out 2 to 3 times a day for 15 mins each

I don't know but I do know that they sell Vitamin D supplements at drug stores. If the sunbathing doesn't work out take those, they were effective for me. :)
