I have iso file which has windows 7 in it, I burn the iso image as it is to a dvd and tried to run as bootable disk but nothing happend so I extracted as winrar and burned the extracted file in dvd and then it worked. I mean why to use iso when we have winrar which have the same function and also I don't know why people call iso as bootable image. Please help me? and explain me in simple words- Thanks in advance.

I take it that you want to know the difference b/w .rar files adn .iso files.
Here is wht both of thjem are:
.RAR: It is an extention of a file in compressed format. You can use "Winrar" or "Winzip" to uncompress and and extract data from these files andn vice versa.
.ISO: It is an extension of an image file. An image and a bundle of different parts of a huge application/Game/movie etc. You can create an image file and burn it in a disk. You can even mount an image on the PC with several tools like Daemon tools, MagiDisk etc and that will save you the cost of a disk and the labour or burnuing it to a disk, It will create a virtual drive and your .iso file will be mounted on that disk. You can install your application/Game directly after mounting your .iso file.
Once you burned the .iso file in your disk, make sure you burn it as an image and not just regular data. Else it won't work and autorun functions worn't work. So look around adn you will find an option to burn images.
Hope this helps... TA

RAR is just a compression software, whereas .iso is a disc image. In the first case (when you write the image to the disc), the iso image is again compressed to another iso image(i.e. .iso.iso) which happens by default when you write some files to a disc. In the second case you extracted those .iso files into normal files using WinRar. And then you burned them onto a disc. The normal files are automatically compressed to .iso extension when you write to a disc. Now the image is just perfect to boot up from. But in the first case it's '.iso.iso' that prevented you from booting. Anyway if you double click on the iso image then the burning program will automatically started. If you do so, then you won't get the '.iso.iso' problem, which happens when you manually add the .iso file to the to-burn filelist.

Because the ISO file is a disk image. It's basically an archive of everything on the disk, compressed into one file. Winrar decompresses it. The ISO is a file. Winrar is just a tool

The first poster is right dude... Whom ever said winamp and winrar did anything close to the same things was way off... Winamp plays movies, music and internet radio where winrar is basically like winzip but better. In case you actually ment winzip and not winamp then winzip and winrar is basically the same program, I have found that winrar compresses better and allows you to split files up into parts. Say you have a file thats 1gb (compressed size) you can split it up into 10 winrar files at 100 mb (compressed size) each where with winzip you can not.

Winrar aren't file types, they are compressed files, that are opened with WINRAR, a computer program. Most files are in winrar form (purple books with a belt around it) when downloaded. You cannot burn a WINRAR file without extracting it first.
ISO is like a mirror of the files,
You have to mount your ISO before it can be burnt. I used Daemon tools.
Hope i Helped.

Huge difference.
.rar files are compressed files, just like .zip's, .7z's, .tar's, and .gz's. .iso files are virtual CD/DVD images that can be burned to a real CD/DVD or mounted to make the computer think it's a real disk through the use of programs.

ONE IS A COMPRESSED FILE AND THE OTHER ONE IS A IMAGE FILE NOT COMPRESSED BUT BOOTABLE, USUALLY IF THE FILE COMES AS .RAR IS READY TO USE FROM WINDOWS, BUT IF IT IS ISO YOU NEED TO BURN IT INTO A CD AND THEN BOOT FROM IT
