California Labor Laws regarding schedule notification?

I am being denied UI because I was fired after telling an employer I could not work a schedule they posted. My hours had been cut from 48/wk to less than 20/wk a few months previously. I was assigned a schedule of "show up at 7:30am on tues. wed. fri. and work until my work was complete, max of 8hours in a day" I was told if there was no work then I was to go home. after three and a half weeks of this schedule I was phoned on Wednesday and told a new schedule was on my desk, I retrieved the schedule thursday morning which applied to the following week. Is is legal for an employer to change a work schedule with such little notification?

This is probably not what you want to hear, but it's based in fact.

If you are in a "work at will" job, and most are, then you can quit or be fired for any reason, or no reason at all - with or without notice.

Why is this important here? Because unless you are being discriminated against for some reason (you are the only one with a schedule change and you are part of a protected class - see www.eeoc.gov) then your schedule is up to your employer. It is up to you to accommodate the need. If you can't, then you are typically considered "no longer able to complete the duties of your position".

So if they are disputing your eligibility, it's up to you to show that you were let go through no fault of your own.
