What exactly fuels the fierce hatred between New York Yankee and Boston Red Sox fans? Has it grown with time?

This question is for real. I was born and raised in So-Cal and am familiar with other baseball rivalries like the LA Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. But this east coast rivalry seems to be much more intense. What is the time line of all this vitriol?

Well it all started with the Yankees acquiring Babe Ruth from the Red Sox. Before that the Red Sox, were actually the most successful team in baseball with 5 championships. Then they give away one of the greatest players ever. All of a sudden the Yankees become the top dogs in baseball. And things just pretty much stayed like that for 86 years. The Yankees accumulated 26 WS while the Red Sox won zero. There are a few times that the Yankees success came at the expense of the Red Sox. Now with the roles having reversed, the rivalry has taken a different turn. But it isn't any less intense.

The fans are a lot alike. Both New York and Boston are huge baseball cities. The fans care A LOT about their teams' so it is only natural that their hatred towards their rivals is so intense. As a Yankee fan you are raised to hate the Red Sox and vice versa for a Boston fan.

Long story short, the sox Were a door mat for the Yanks for years. In 1920 the sox owner needed money & sold the greatest baseball player (ever?) of his time to the yanks. the yanks win 26 WS and the sox 0 'till 2004. NY is a big market and Boston is just trying to compete so until recently it was like siblings fighting w/ the yanks being the older and strong but now the sox have grown up and in 2004 took there 1st step to ease all the heart ache by taking 4 in a row down 3-0 in the 2004 playoffs on there way to there 1st of 2 World series.

    Great yanks sox fights

The rivarly between New York and Boston started when the Babe was traded to the Yankees from Boston. The rivarly was never as strong after that. Since then, the "curse" predicted that the Red Sox would never win a World Series again, brawls and bench clearing arguements, and many altercations between fans and players. The Red Sox and Yankees rivarly has heated up over the years. Sports Illustrated named it the most intense rivarly of any teams in any sports. Its very entertaining and very exciting. You never know what to expect.

Well in 1918, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance a production of No No Nanette on Broadway. *Slaps self in face* From then to 2004 the Red Sox went title-less, while the Yankees dominated the baseball world. This fueled a hatred, brought on as much by jealousy as anything, stronger than any we have seen in professional sports.

It all goes back to Babe Ruth, he betrayed the Red Sox and thats where the hatred began. Then came the A-Rod daubacle in 2004 when he was traded to the Yankees and not the Red Sox. It might also have something to do with the Yankees and Red Sox fans mentality, they are very very passionate about their teams and with the playoff series from a few years back, i think it is one of the more exciting rivalries in sports.

well, when babe ruth was sold so the yankees in 1919 from the red sox, this became known as the curse of bambino, which meant the red sox didnt win another world series untl 2004, over 80 years later.

My first guess would be Babe Ruth getting really good in NY and spending a lot of his career there. And it's definentely grown with time. People take sports very seriously and i'm sure the dislike has only grown.
