Smoking cessation - help please?

I have to quit smoking and i'd like any advice i can get.

I quit smoking 10 years ago, but started again 7 months ago. It happens i have to have major surgery next month and the doctor says "no smoking, no nicotine".

Any advice on how to quit without the help of nicotine gum or other nicotine aides?

For those who have quit, what have you done to take your mind off cravings?

I have a feeling i'm going to gain 20 pounds this month, by substituting food for cigs.

thank you for any help you can offer!

Update:

Thank you Star, but the gum contains nicotine, which i'm trying to avoid.

take care.

I'm 13 never started never planning too ha ha ha but I will help! there is gum you can chew, the patch (don't sleep with it on) or you can even hold carrot sticks in your hands Edit: that's right sorry I forgot about that! but maybe you can just try orbit or a type of bubble gum when you have a craving! or the 5 gum is really good to and have amazing flavors (all are nicotine free and kid friendly so..)

After several failed attempts at quitting smoking I tried hypnosis. I'm happy to report that I am still not smoking a year and a half later. Although I successfully quit smoking after the hypnotic intervention I'm still sceptical. Maybe it's a question of mind over matter - I really don't know. Can I really attribute my smoke-free life to hypnosis? Yes? No? Maybe? All of the above. Try it. Think of it this way; if you successfully quit after hypnosis, it was worth the investment. If you're not successful, you've wasted a few hundred dollars (I did it in one session x<100$). Can you live with that? Perhaps you'd feel more comfortable using a more traditional method. Hypnosis can seem positively goofy. Have you considered the following: patches, pills, smoking cessation programs. Check your local listings for the Lung Association and see if your insurance will cover the cost for treatment. Best of luck
