Option 1:
Connect your Antenna or Cable box to your VCR RF input. Connect the VCR RF output to the TV RF input using a coaxial cable. Connect your DVD player RCA output to the TV RCA inputs. You may need to have the VCR on to watch programs from broadcast or cable.
Option 2:
Buy an RCA selector switch to select either VCR or DVD unit input. You can get a manual switch pretty cheap. If you want one with a remote, it may cost you a little more. Internet search "RCA Selector". See my link below.

Yellow, Red, White grouping = Composite RCA
Green, Blue, Red + Red/White grouping = Component RCA
In terms of cable type, they are the same thing. The only difference is that Component breaks up the video signal into 3 separate signals. This allows component to deliver a superior quality. And, depending on what you are feeding the component jacks, it can handle HD (it won't automatically make something HD, but if you give it HD it can handle it). But it can do SD as well.
So if your VCR or DVD player has Component out (many do), you can just use that option. One device can use the composite RCA and the other device can use the Component RCA. You can buy a component bundle of cables from any TV or big box store easily enough. Here is an online link just to give you an idea, http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-AUD-1380-06...
Alternatively, you can buy an RCA switcher. So you would plug both your DVD player AND VCR into the switcher. The switcher would then feed into the one single composite RCA port on the TV. Then you just change the switcher to shift back and forth from DVD to VCR. These can be found at TV, big box, and electronics stores. Again, here are some online links just to give you an idea of what you're looking for,

Just so you know, these switchers are also often called RF Modulators. Another search term you might want to use. All you need to be concerned with though is that the device has multiple Composite RCA INPUTS (take feeds from devices) and one Composite RCA OUTPUT (send feed to TV).

Are you making sure that you 1) have the TV on the correct channel to play DVDs or 2) that you're choosing the appropriate input? My television has multiple choices for input on the input menu from the remote; i.e. Video 1, Video 2, Comp 1, Comp 2, etc.

Connect your DVD to component. I haven't heard of a standard home DVD player that doesn't have it, all mine do.
If you have to use red/white/yellow, get an A/V selector box.
